Quakertown youth football team to play in Pop Warner Super Bowl

FROM THE MORNING CALL

The unbeaten Quakertown Panthers Junior Pee Wee 105-pound youth football team this week is heading to Orlando, Fla., to play in the Pop Warner Super Bowl.

The team, consisting of 10- and 11-year-old players, will represent the Eastern Region of the nation, Bux-Mont Youth Football and the Quakertown Midget Football Association at the Dec. 4-11 Pop Warner Super Bowl National Championship at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney World.

It is only the second time in the 54-year history of the Quakertown Midget Football Association that a team from the association has qualified for the Pop Warner Super Bowl. It also occurred in 2003.

Quakertown went undefeated through the regular season and won the Bux-Mont Pop Warner Division 2 title on Oct. 23 and a preliminary round victory on Oct. 30 in the Pop Warner Eastern Regional playoffs. A late rally by a team from Buffalo, N.Y., sent Quakertown to defeat in the next round, however the Buffalo team was later disqualified.

Quakertown then defeated Spring Valley, N.Y., by 20-0, followed by victories on Nov. 20 against Lansdale and then on Nov. 26 against Holmdel, N.J., for the Eastern Regional title. Quakertown won the Nov. 26 game by 24-0 to improve to 15-0 on the season.

The team has a fund-raiser in place to help to defray the cost of the trip to Florida. In addition to bake sales, car washes and other events, the team is seeking donations from the public by Tuesday. For information, call Ron or Kim Lefkoski at 215-529-9085 or 267-261-0580.
