In Your School Column – meetings and events at Lehigh Valley Schools

LEHIGH COUNTY

IN THE ALLENTOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT schools will be closed Oct. 11 due to staff development day. The district's Band Festival will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 13 at J. Birney Crum Stadium. The rain date is Oct. 20.

•Allen High School's Latino Leadership Club will meet with Superintendent Gerald Zahorchak at 3 p.m. Tuesday and will hold an event titled, Latinos Moving Forward at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Holiday Inn Allentown, Ninth and Hamilton streets.

•South Mountain Middle School will hold Pastries with Parents 7:30-8 a.m. Tuesday and an open house at 7 p.m. Thursday.



•Cleveland Elementary School's art day program is held 3:15-5 p.m. Fridays in the cafeteria.

•Jefferson Elementary School will hold Golden Stallion assemblies Oct. 8, at 9:30 a.m. for morning kindergarten and first and second grades, and at 1:45 p.m. for afternoon kindergarten and third through fifth grades. The school's 100th anniversary celebration will be held at 1:45 p.m. Oct. 15 followed by a Fun Fest 4-7 p.m.

•Mosser Elementary School will hold a PBS parent workshop at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and will be preceded by a parent advisory committee meeting at 3 p.m.

•Washington Elementary School will hold an after school library program 2:45-4:15 p.m. in Room 108. Student award assemblies will be held Oct. 8, at 8:30 a.m. for third and fourth grades and at 9:30 a.m. for first and second grades.

IN THE EAST PENN SCHOOL DISTRICT the following meetings will be held next week:

•Lincoln Elementary School will hold a PTO meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

•Jefferson Elementary School will hold a PTO meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

•Willow Lane Elementary School will hold a PTO meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday.


•Emmaus High School's World Language Honor Society will hold an induction ceremony 6-9 p.m. Thursday.

IN THE PARKLAND SCHOOL DISTRICT: A high school marching band competition will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday at the football stadium. Hosted by the Parkland High School Marching Band, 10 bands will compete. Admission is $8. For information, the website is http://www.phsmusicboosters.com.

•Fred J. Jaindl Elementary School will hold a community dedication and open house at 3 p.m. Sunday. The public is invited to the formal dedication and ribbon-cutting. Tours of the building will be offered.

•Springhouse Middle School will host the Shannon Tanner Family Concert at 7 p.m. Oct. 8. Shannon Tanner finished his 21st season performing his summer family show at Shelter Cove Harbor, Hilton Head, S.C., and during the winter, performs at the Park Hyatt Hotel, Beaver Creek, Colo. The family show includes many singalongs. Tickets are $3 and those ages 2 and younger are free. Proceeds benefit the Parkland Elementary School PTOs.

IN THE WHITEHALL-COPLAY SCHOOL DISTRICT: Picture day will be held Tuesday at Gockley Elementary School for kindergarten and first grade classes. Order forms were distributed to students. First-graders will have the option of selecting peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. The sandwich will take the place of the main entrée and the price of lunch is $2.10.

•Whitehall-Coplay Middle School will hold open house and meet the teacher night 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday. This is a change from what appears on the school calendar.

NORTHAMPTON COUNTY

ST. THERESA SCHOOL students, faculty, staff and church community will celebrate St. Theresa's Feast Day Friday. The celebration will begin with Mass at 9 a.m. followed by a student prayer service in the grotto area behind the church, 1408 Easton Road, Hellertown. MORAVIAN ACADEMY'S Upper School, 4313 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township, will host its 42nd annual country fair 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The event will include food, live entertainment, teacher dunk tank, climbing wall, British car show, baking contest, book sale, rides and games. A farmers market will feature fresh vegetables, baked goods, jams/jellies, breads and coffee. The third annual "Run for the Trees" 5K fun run/walk for all ages will begin at 9 a.m. The cost, which includes T-shirt, is $15. For information, call the school at 610-691-1600.

WILSON AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT will hold a school board meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the Tollinger Administration Building, 2040 Washington Blvd., Wilson.

GOV. WOLF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, 1920 Butztown Road, Bethlehem, will hold Walk to School Day Wednesday. In pairs, Gov. Wolf faculty and staff will meet students and parents at various intersections throughout the community. They will walk together to support the state's initiative to make walking to school a safer and more appealing transportation alternative while encouraging health and safety. The event will be held rain or shine.



EASTON AREA HIGH SCHOOL Instrumental Music Association will host the 36th annual First Flag Over the United Colonies Band Festival at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Cottingham Stadium, 2601 William Penn Highway, Palmer Township. The event will begin with an exhibition performance by Easton Area Middle School's Seventh and Grade Marching Band. Competing high school bands will include: Southern Lehigh, Wilson Area, Allen, Emmaus, Saucon Valley, Pocono Mountain East and North Hunterdon. The cost is $5 for adults; $4 for students and seniors; and free for ages 5 and younger. The rain date is Thursday.

NAZARETH BLUE EAGLE MARCHING BAND and band parents will host the 28th annual Blue Eagle Soundfest at 6 p.m. Oct. 9 at Andrew S. Leh Stadium, behind Nazareth Area High School on Liberty Street. The music competition will feature 13 schools from across the region. A performance by Kutztown University Marching Band will conclude the competition. Tickets, available at the gate, are $8 for adults; $4 for students and seniors; and free for children ages 4 and younger.

PENNSYLVANIA COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY'S Student Government Association is leading an effort to establish a scholarship fund in memory of Tracy A. Garis, a former student from Hellertown who died in a traffic accident in June. The group is planning several fundraisers, including the fourth annual homecoming car show on Oct. 9. The Penn College Institutional Advancement Office is accepting donations to the Tracy A. Garis Memorial Scholarship fund online at http://www.pct.edu/afd or by mail: 1 College Ave., Williamsport, PA 17701-5799.

BETHLEHEM AREA SCHOOL BOARD recently recognized Scott Toonder, a teacher at Marvine Elementary School, for being selected the 2010 System 44 Outstanding Educator. The honor is awarded to remarkable teachers who have achieved great results for their students using Scholastic's READ 180 and System 44 reading intervention programs.

BUCKS COUNTY

NOCKAMIXON STATE PARK, 1542 Mountain View Drive, Haycock Township, will hold a free Creepy Crawlers program at 10 a.m. Oct. 9. Participants will learn about insects, spiders and other invertebrates. The program is for families with children, ages 3-7, but older and younger siblings are also welcome. For information, call 215-529-7307.

CARBON, MONROE AND SCHUYLKILL COUNTIES

MONROE COUNTY ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CENTER, 8050 Running Valley Road, Hamilton Township, will hold the Kettle Creek for Kids program, "Katydid," 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. Children, ages 4-6, will learn how insects sting. Parents must attend with their children. The cost is $5; $3 for members. To register, call 570-629-3061.

TAMAQUA AREA HIGH SCHOOL, 500 Penn St., will host the 14th annual Land of the Running Water Band Adjudication Festival at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9. The event, held rain or shine, will feature 14 high school bands. Tickets, $5, will be available at the door.

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA, Minsi Trails Council, will hold Cub Scout Sign-Up noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 10 and 11 at Country Junction, 6565 Interchange Road, Lehighton. Boys in first through fifth grades and their parents are invited to a special event which will include Ghost Town USA and hayrides. For information call 610-264-8551.
