Catasauqua claims first District 11 baseball title since 1997

No. 6 seed Catasauqua completed an improbable playoff run this evening, riding seven strong innings from Joe Taves and a four-run second inning to an 8-2 win over No. 4 Pine Grove in the District 11 Class 2A baseball final at Coca-Cola Park.

Taves struck out nine and limited Pine Grove (15-8 overall), the three-time defending district champion, to two runs and seven hits in his complete-game win as the Rough Riders captured their first district title since 1997. They will play the winner of Thursday's District One Class 2A title game between Devon Prep and New Hope-Solebury in a PIAA Class 2A state first-round game Monday.

Catasauqua (13-10) did not qualify for the District 11 playoffs until beating Northwestern in its final regular-season game. The Rough Riders then beat No. 3 Pen Argyl, No. 2 Schuylkill Haven and No. 4 Pine Grove en route to the district championship.
