HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania Lawmakers delivered their first on-time budget in eight years on Wednesday night, as they voted to send a $28.05 billion spending plan for the fiscal year that begins Thursday to Gov. Ed Rendell for his signature.
The House voted 117-84 to approve the plan shortly before 6 p.m. on Wednesday. The vote came roughly three hours after the Senate voted 37-13 to sign off on a compromise budget that boosts spending for education and economic development, ducks a major tax increase and cuts spending for libraries, state forests and other programs.
"We are setting the stage to end the last eight years and start anew in 2010-2011 with a fiscally responsible paradigm for families and busineses in Pennsylvania," House Minority Whip Mike Turzai, R-Allegheny, said shortly before House memebrs cast their ballots.
Rendell is expected to sign the budget plan, which he has described as "frugal," and containing "pain" for many state residents.
The budget bill lawmakers approved Wednesday boosts overall state spending by less than 1 percent, from the current $27.9 billion, and by 4 percent for public education.
The Allentown public schools, for instance, are in line for a 2 percent increase in funding. The Bethlehem Area District would see a 13.44 percent increase, according to data provided Wednesday.
Despite the symbolic importance of getting the spending bill over the goal line for the first time since Rendell took the helm in 2003, lawmakers must also pass a series of so-called "trailer" bills that will implement the spending plan, approve revenues and provide funding for school districts

Halladay, Phillies roughed up by Reds in series finale
CINCINNATI — Jay Bruce provided a perfect send-off.
Bruce hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning off Roy Halladay, who has been anything but flawless since his perfect game, and the Cincinnati Reds rallied for yet another victory in their final at-bat Wednesday, 4-3 over the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Reds lead the majors with 25 comeback wins, including 14 in their final at-bat — tied for most in the majors.
"When you win a game like this, it's a surprise but not a shock anymore because we've been doing it from day one," Bruce said. "I think this is one of our best wins today."
This one felt especially good under the circumstances. The Reds won't play at home again until July 16, playing 11 in a row on the road before the All-Star break. It's their longest stretch away from home since 2001.
"You want to leave on a high note," manager Dusty Baker said. "This was a very well-played game in all respects."
Joey Votto also homered off Halladay (9-7), who fell to 2-4 since his perfect game on May 29. He lost his touch while trying to hold a 3-2 lead in the eighth.
Jonny Gomes opened the inning with a single off a hanging curve. Bruce then connected on a fastball that wandered to the middle of the plate instead of staying on the outside corner.
"I beat myself with two bad pitches in the eighth," Halladay said. "I really didn't think they were hitting the ball all that hard until then."
Arthur Rhodes (3-2) pitched a perfect inning, recovering from his 10th-inning loss a few hours earlier. Francisco Cordero pitched the ninth for his 21st save in 26 tries.
It was a lousy series for the Phillies, who lost two key players to injuries and two of the three games. Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel also was ejected from a game for arguing balls and strikes.
The defending NL champs put second baseman Chase Utley and third baseman Placido Polanco on the disabled list Tuesday. Utley has a sprained right thumb, Polanco a chronically sore left elbow. Both were back in Philadelphia getting more tests.
The Phillies' fill-ins have kept them in games. Brian Schneider and Wilson Valdez hit three-run homers during a 9-6, 10-inning win on Tuesday night, when Philadelphia ended Rhodes' record-tying streak at 33 scoreless appearances.
They were in position for another improbable win after reserve catcher Dane Sardinha hit a three-run homer — only the second of his career — off Aaron Harang.
Halladay gave up a season-high 13 hits and struck out 10 in eight innings, throwing 119 pitches. Manuel didn't hesitate to send him back out for another inning after he escaped a threat in the seventh.
"In the eighth, that's his game," Manuel said. "He was fine."
Sardinha connected with two outs in the fourth and Halladay on deck, hitting the first pitch several rows deep into the seats in left field. Sardinha, a .137 career hitter, hit his first career homer last week in an interleague game against Cleveland — Ohio's other major league team.
Sardinha has three hits since his June 19 promotion, two of them homers. He was a second-round draft pick by the Reds in 2000 and appeared in two career games for Cincinnati, going 0 for 5. Hitting a homer against the Reds had extra significance.
"A little bit," Sardinha said. "Any hit I get means a lot to me at this stage of my career."
NOTES: The Reds optioned LH reliever Daniel Ray Herrera to Triple-A Louisville after the game. They plan to call up LHP Travis Wood from Triple-A Louisville for his big-league debut on Thursday at the Chicago Cubs. Wood lost the competition for the fifth starter's spot to RHP Mike Leake during spring training. … LHP Aroldis Chapman gave up four runs, hit two batters and threw two wild pitches in 1 2-3 innings in relief for Louisville on Tuesday night. The Reds want to see whether the Cuban defector could help them as a reliever after the All-Star break. … Votto has reached base safely in 38 consecutive games, the longest streak by a Red since Pete Rose did it in 48 straight games in 1978

Former WB17 Weatherman Sighting
Former WB17 meteorologist Steve MacLaughlin, was spotted on the Weather Channel the last couple of days. McLaughlin left his weekend meteorologist position at the NBC station in Dallas earlier this year and moved back to New Jersey. He’ll be filling in on various shifts in at the Weather Channel for the next month.
Speaking of the old WB17 news, Jenna Wolfe of the Weekend Today show is doing the best of the former WB news people. Anyone out there remember some of the others?

Larry Leaves
Coincidentally, a day after I posted something about being a fan of The Joy Behar Show on HLN, CNN’s Larry King announced he will be finally be retiring from his 9 p.m. show.
Most agree that Larry has lost it over the last year or so. The emergence of Behar in the spring was a factor.
As for Larry’s replacement, I would NOT like to see Ryan Seacrest get that job. Katie Couric would be my choice.

CBS3 Names Replacement For Liz Keptner in A.M.
Philadelphia, June 30, 2010 – Erika von Tiehl, an evening anchor at the CBS stations in Miami, will join Ukee Washington as co-anchor of Eyewitness News This Morning on CBS 3 and The CW Philly this August, Susan Schiller, Vice President and News Director has announced.
Von Tiehl currently co-anchors the 5:30 p.m. newscast for WFOR-TV and the 10 p.m. newscast on sister station WBFS-TV in Miami. She has been with the Miami stations since 2007. Previously, von Tiehl was a morning and noon news anchor for WKBW, the ABC station in Buffalo, New York and an anchor/reporter for KIEM, the NBC affiliate in Eureka, California.
Von Tiehl has specialized in breaking news coverage throughout her career, reporting on a variety of stories from a tsunami threat in Northern California to the search an escaped convict on the FBI’s “most wanted list” in New York State. On the lighter side of the business, she has developed multiple lifestyle segments for the morning news programs she has anchored.
“Her background as a reporter, coupled with her versatility as an anchor, makes Erika a great addition to our morning team,” Schiller says. “The morning news is a vehicle where you get to use every tool in the toolbox and she is well-prepared to do so and enthusiastic about the challenge.”
Von Tiehl, is a 2003 cum laude graduate of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications studies. A native of Pasadena, California, this history buff says she is looking forward to living in such a celebrated city. “The City’s reputation for rich history, museums and great neighborhoods precedes it,” she says, “and I can’t wait to dive in.”
Eyewitness News This Morning airs 5 to 7 a.m. on CBS 3 and 7 to 9 a.m. on The CW Philly. CBS 3 (KYW-TV) and The CW Philly 57 (WPSG-TV) are part of CBS Television Stations, a division of CBS Corporation.

Four IronPigs selected for all-star game
By Jeff Schuler
Four IronPigs were named to the International League team that will meet the Pacific Coast League in the Triple-A All-Star game at Cola-Cola Park next month.
First baseman Andy Tracy and third baseman Cody Ransom were voted in as starters by the fans for the July 14th game, to be telecast nationally by MLB Network. The fans also voted relief pitcher Scott Mathieson onto the squad while starting pitcher Nate Bump was the fourth IronPig named to the team.
Durham, Charlotte and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre each had three players selected to the 30-man squad. Yankee slections were closer Jonathan Albaladejo, shortstop Eduardo Nunez and catcher Jesse Montero.
Also named to the squad was Perkasie native Erik Kratz of Indianapolis, the IL's Top Star selection in last year's all-star game in Portland.

Pa. budget passed by state Senate
HARRISBURG — A belt-tightening $28 billion budget bill passed the state Senate by a comfortable margin and was sent the House, where leaders hoped to get an on-time budget to Gov. Ed Rendell's desk before midnight.
The 37-to-13 vote on Wednesday followed less than an hour of debate in which senators described it as a compromise product of difficult financial times.
"It's important for us to reflect the recession we're in … by having a budget that constrains spending," said Appropriations Chairman Jake Corman, R-Centre.
The budget deal would boost spending over 2009-10 by less than 1 percent.
House Democratic leaders who hope to make the deadline will need help from Republicans — many against the budget's size — in mustering the supermajority required to waive a rule that requires 24 hours' notice before a bill is voted.
Rendell's previous seven budgets have all been enacted after the July 1 start of the fiscal year. He came closest in 2006, while running for re-election, by signing the bill on July 2.

Berks woman sues Phillie Phanatic
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — What's big, green and facing a civil suit? The Phillie Phanatic.
A Pennsylvania woman is suing the Phillies and the man behind the portly mascot over injuries she says were caused by the furry critter climbing on top of her at a minor league game in 2008.
Attorney John Speicher says Grace Crass was injured when the Phanatic climbed on top of her during a Reading Phillies game. Crass claims the bumbling bird exacerbated her arthritis, ultimately forcing her into knee replacement surgery.
Speicher acknowledges that suing the Phanatic seems "like suing Santa Claus," but his client experience a real injury because of the mascot's shenanigans.
The suit names the Phillies, their minor league affiliate and Tom Burgoyne, the man who plays the Phanatic. It seeks more than $50,000 in damages.
Phillies spokeswoman Bonnie Clark declined comment on the suit.

Utley and Polanco head to disabled list
Injuries for the Phillies just keep mounting.
The club placed second baseman Chase Utley and third baseman Placido Polanco on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday, assistant general manager Scott Proefrock said.
Utley has a sprained right thumb and Polanco has inflammation in his left elbow.
To fill their spots on the 25-man roster, the Phillies selected the contract of utilityman Greg Dobbs and recalled infielder Brian Bocock from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

DENVER (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies and Colorado Rockies will make up their rainout from this spring on Sept. 2 at Coors Field.
The game was originally scheduled as the second game of a double-header on May 12.

Verbal Agreement Said To Be Reached On Budget.
Legislative Leaders And Gov. Ed ...
...have apparently reached a verbal agreement on a $28.05 billion for the fiscal year that starts Thursday. Leaders are expected to begin sharing the details of that plan with rank-and-file members as soon as this afternoon.
House Majority Leader Todd Eachus, D-Luzerne, confirmed the existence of the agreement this morning and said Democratic bean-counters were "finalizing the information."
"We're going to provide a framework to members. But as we've said so many times before, this is no final agreement until all our members sign off on it."
There's early indication that Eachus could have a fight on his hands. Southeastern Democrats are said to be upset with reductions in some line-items. Though Eachus cautioned against dissent before seeing the final budget numbers.
The Hazleton Democrat said he was optimistic that a general fund bill could be approved before the fiscal year ends at midnight on Wednesday. What happens from here largely depends on action taken in the Senate and in caucus rooms. House Republicans are sticking by their demand for a $27.5 billion budget for now.
We described the Senate timeline in an earlier post, but for those of you tuning in late, here's a brief recap: The general fund bill is now before the Senate Appropriations Committee. It would have to be reported to the floor, and then amended on the Senate floor, voted on, and sent to the House by Wednesday.
Assuming that all happens, the House would have to suspend its internal rules to allow for a final vote on Wednesday before the end of the 2009-10 fiscal year.
Erik Arneson, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi, R-Delaware, disputed Eachus' version of events, saying a final agreement is not yet in place.
However, "we are in the process of putting everything on paper in legislative form so that there are no misunderstandings, Arneson said.
"Unfortunately, recent history shows that this part of the process never goes as smoothly as it should," he continued. "We are hopeful that the outstanding issues can be resolved promptly and a spending plan can be sent to the governor tomorrow."
The budget framework now under discussion is premised on the arrival of $850 million in federal assistance in Washington. And placeholder language will be inserted in what's known as the "fiscal code" to deal with that money when it comes.
With Washington dragging its feet, it's unlikely that money will come on-time or in the expected amount.
The budget agreement also includes the eventual approval, before Oct. 1, of a new extraction tax on Marcellus shale natural gas drillers. As we reported earlier this morning, new taxes on cigars and smokeless tobacco are out. Ditto for the dime-a-pack increase in cigarette taxes.
In lieu of taxes, the budget framework relies on a number of one-time transfers and other feats of accounting legerdemain. We're still tracking down details on the specifics.
If it happens, the budget plan includes a $250 million increase in the basic education subsidy for kindergarten through twelfth-grade.
More on this as it comes.

Paraguay advances to World Cup quarterfinals with penalty-kick victory over Japan
Paraguay advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time with a 5-3 victory over Japan in penalty kicks after a 0-0 draw today.
Oscar Cardozo clinched the win with a low left-footed drive past goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima. The only miss in the shootout was by Japan defender Yuichi Komano on the third try when he hit the crossbar. That made the difference.
The Paraguayans are the fourth South American team into the final eight; only Chile fell short, and it lost to Brazil in the second round.
When Cardozo easily beat Kawashima to end the exhausting match and nerve-racking shootout, his teammates stormed onto the field in celebration of the nation's biggest World Cup win. Cardozo pulled at his jersey, goalkeeper Justo Villar jumped on him, and they were quickly swarmed on by the whole team.
Japanese players watched the final shot on their knees with their arms around each other. When it went into the net, they let go and sagged. Keiji Tamada fell onto his back, while Japanese players and fans wept.
Paraguay will play the winner of the Spain-Portugal match, to be played later today, in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Pa. lawmakers await briefing on developing $28 billion budget deal
Rank-and-file Pennsylvania legislators are awaiting a briefing on a developing budget agreement as Wednesday's midnight deadline approaches.
A top aide to Gov. Ed Rendell said the governor hasn't signed off and legislative leaders still need to brief rank-and-file legislators.
Rendell's chief of staff Steve Crawford says he believes the agreement reflects the governor's priorities to protect money for education, children and job creation.
But some details remain unfinished.
The approximately $28 billion spending plan would represent a less than 1 percent increase over the approved spending level in the nearly ended fiscal year.
Legislators also agreed to negotiate the details of a new tax on natural gas extraction from the rich Marcellus Shale reserve.

THE STAR FROM THE OFFICE IS RETIRING
Steve Carell confirmed to UsMagazine.com that he will be leaving after the 2010-2011 season of NBC’s hit “mockumentary” comedy series “The Office.”
His reason for leaving the show is not because of cast conflicts, “These are some of my best friends in the world! But it will be good -- it will be good for everybody.”
The reason then, “It’s the last on my contract, and I want to honor my contract." Carell,47, plans to spend more time with his wife and their two kids.
In 2005 the American version of “The Office” debuted and became a cult classic. Michael Scott, played by Carell, is known as a friend first and a boss second to his fellow employees at the Scranton, PA branch of Dunder Mifflin.
Carell won a Golden Globe in 2006 for his role on the series and has been nominated four times for an Emmy, but has yet to win.
“The Office” is expected to continue without Carell. Who will take Michael Scott’s position? It’s possible that Dwight Shrute is already plotting his way to the top as we speak.
THE MORNING CALL
His reason for leaving the show is not because of cast conflicts, “These are some of my best friends in the world! But it will be good -- it will be good for everybody.”
The reason then, “It’s the last on my contract, and I want to honor my contract." Carell,47, plans to spend more time with his wife and their two kids.

Man found dead on LA freeway was Lafayette student
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Coroner's investigators have identified a man found dead on a Los Angeles freeway as a 20-year-old Lafayette College student who failed to return home from a party in Bel Air.
Coroner's Lt. Fred Corral said Monday that authorities used fingerprints to identify James Daniel O'Connell.
Los Angeles police say O'Connell was last seen alive early Saturday at a party in Bel Air, which he attended with his brother.
His mother reported him missing later Saturday and police dispatched helicopter crews and patrol officers to search for him.
Police say the man found dead on the freeway apparently had been struck by two vehicles. The drivers sped away before officers arrived.

Philadelphia Phillies lose to Cincinnati Reds 7-3 in series opener
Scott Rolen hit his 300th career homer, and Johnny Cueto shut down the team that gave him a historic loss the last time they faced, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 7-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies tonight. The Reds won for the sixth time in seven games, keeping them atop the NL Central. It's the latest they have been in first place since 1999.
Rolen hit a two-run shot in the fourth inning off Kyle Kendrick (4-3), a hooking drive that smacked off the bottom of the foul pole in left field. He added a sacrifice fly. Cueto (8-2) retired only two batters when he faced the Phillies last July 6, setting the Reds on course for a 22-1 drubbing that was the worst in franchise history. This time, he allowed six hits and one run in eight innings.
The Phillies lost for only the second time in seven games. An offense that averaged 6.8 runs over the last 11 games froze against the 24-year-old Cueto.
Ryan Howard had a double and triple and scored the Phillies' run off Cueto in the seventh. Raul Ibanez hit a two-run homer in the ninth off Bill Bray.

Dave Post approved as Phillipsburg High School head wrestling coach
Dave Post was unanimously approved as Phillipsburg High School's head wrestling coach by the Phillipsburg School Board. The 2003 Phillipsburg High School graduate said he's come full circle.
"Growing up I came to the high school matches with my dad (Chuck Post), envisioning I'd wrestle for Phillipsburg some day, which I did. Then to go to college and come back, it's been nice," Post said.
Post, a Cornell University graduate, had been an assistant to Jason Magditch, who chose not to return as coach when budget cuts eliminated his position as director of physical education and discipline at the end of the 2009-10 school year. Post is a math teacher at the high school and head boys cross country coach since 2008.
Post and assistant coach Scott Silvis are in Williamsport, Pa., supervising a group of 10 Phillipsburg wrestlers at Lycoming College's summer camp. Post said Magditch came to them a few weeks ago and asked them to continue running the program's summer workout schedule. It was then, Post said, he learned Magditch might not be returning for the 2010-11 season.
"Being an assistant the past two years I am very familiar with the kids, and I knew some of the kids from doing summer camps when I came home from college," Post said.
Post was 111-22 in his career at Phillipsburg, wrestling at 145 as a freshman and sophomore and at 160 as a junior and senior. He was a four-time District 1 champion and two-time region champion. He placed fifth at the state tournament as a junior and third as a senior. Post lettered during the 2003-04 season for Cornell's nationally ranked program.
The school board also approved Silvis and former Easton Area High School star Brad Gentzle as Post's assistants.

Brazil blanks Chile 3-0 in World Cup round of 16
Brazil beat South American rival Chile 3-0 in Johannesburg to advance to the quarterfinals of the World Cup. Brazil will meet the Netherlands, a 2-1 winner over Slovakia.
Juan opened the scoring in the 34th minute at Ellis Park Stadium with a firm header from near the penalty spot off a corner kick. Luis Fabiano added to the lead in the 38th, receiving a one-touch pass from Kaka and dribbling past goalkeeper Claudio Bravo inside the area before hitting the open net. Robinho scored his first goal in the tournament with a shot from the top of the area in the 59th minute, a one-timer into the far corner.
Chile is the first South American team eliminated. Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay are in the final eight, and Paraguay plays Japan on Tuesday.
Brazil, a five-time champion, has reached the quarterfinals of the World Cup every time since the 1990 tournament in Italy, when it fell 1-0 to Diego Maradona's Argentina in the second round.

Durham Bulls defeat Lehigh Valley IronPigs 3-2
Durham Bulls shortstop J.J. Furmaniak came back to haunt his old team, delivering a two-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Bulls to a 3-2 International League victory over the visiting Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
Furmaniak, who played for the IronPigs last season, drove in Angel Chavez and Desmond Jennings. Ryan Vogelsong, who started the ninth for the IronPigs, suffered the loss.
The IronPigs took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on RBI singles by Domonic Brown and Melvin Dorta. The Bulls pushed across a run in the seventh on Furmaniak's RBI single, which plated Jennings.
Dorta was 3-for-4 for the IronPigs. Lehigh Valley starter Drew Carpenter pitched six scoreless innings. He allowed five hits, no runs, three walks and struck out four.
The IronPigs return home Tuesday to face Rochester in a partial doubleheader. The completion of a suspended game, which will be picked up in the second inning, starts at 6:05 p.m., followed by the regularly scheduled game.
Philadelphia Phillies starter J.A. Happ is expected to make a rehab start for the IronPigs in Game 1. Former major leaguer Brandon Duckworth is slated to start in Game 2 for Lehigh Valley.

Netherlands advances to World Cup final eight by beating Slovakia, 2-1
Like clockwork, the Oranje are into the World Cup quarterfinals.
The Netherlands reached the final eight today when standouts Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder scored in each half of a 2-1 victory over Slovakia.
The Oranje, who have never won soccer's biggest prize, went ahead in the 18th minute when Robben cut inside from the right wing and found the net with a low, precise shot from 20 yards. Robben sat out the first two group matches with a hamstring injury, but his return has rekindled the crafty Dutch offense.
Sneijder doubled the lead into an empty net in the 84th after a gamble by Slovak goalkeeper Jan Mucha backfired.
The Moses Mabhida Stadium was filled mostly with orange-clad Netherlands fans and they blasted their vuvuzelas on Robben's first touch. After his goal, the sound became deafening.
Netherlands goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg preserved the win with two key saves in the 67th and the Dutch extended their team-record unbeaten streak to 23 games.
Robert Vittek scored on a last-second penalty kick for Slovakia, then rushed to the net to retrieve the ball, only to hear the final whistle.
In the quarterfinals, the Netherlands will face either five-time champion Brazil or Chile, who play later today.

Phillies fall to Jays
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — John Buck, Aaron Hill and Alex Gonzalez homered to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to a 5-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.
Shaun Marcum (7-3) pitched six solid innings, allowing one run and five hits while striking out six and walking one. The right-hander improved to 7-1 in nine starts following a Blue Jays defeat, the latest victory coming on the heels of Friday night’s 9-0 loss to the Phillies and former Toronto ace Roy Halladay.
The game was the second in a series that was moved from Toronto to Philadelphia because of the G20 Summit. The Blue Jays wore their home, alternate black uniforms and batted second, while the Phillies wore their road grays.
Ryan Howard homered for the Phillies, who had won four straight and scored 28 runs in their previous three games. The Blue Jays had lost four of five.
In relief of Marcum, Scott Downs pitched two hitless innings and Shawn Camp worked a hitless ninth as the Phillies failed to get a hit in their last five innings.
Philadelphia left-hander Cole Hamels (6-6) had one of his worst outings of the season, allowing five runs and six hits in four innings. Hamels hadn’t given up more than three earned runs in nine straight starts. He pitched less than five innings only one other time, a June 1 start at Atlanta that was halted after two-thirds of an inning due to a rain delay.
The Blue Jays entered batting a major league-worst .201 against lefties, but had no problems with Hamels.
After Lyle Overbay singled, Buck homered to left to stake Toronto to a 2-0 second-inning lead. The Blue Jays tacked on a run in the next inning on Hill’s two-out homer to left and added two more with Gonzalez’s two-run shot in the fourth, also to left. Buck leads major league catchers with 13 homers.
Hill and Gonzalez had been 3 for 26 and 4 for 27, respectively, prior to their home runs.
Toronto upped its major league-leading home run total to 114.
Howard’s sixth-inning homer provided all the offense for Philadelphia. He improved to 2 for 3 with a pair of home runs against Marcum.
NOTES: Philadelphia OF Jayson Werth went 0 for 3 with three strikeouts and is 0 for 4 with four Ks lifetime against Marcum. Phillies OF Shane Victorino has four hits in his last 29 at-bats. Despite the appearance of hundreds of empty seats, the Phillies announced a sellout crowd of 44,426.

Early runs lead to fourth straight loss Friday
DURHAM, N.C. – The stage was set for Domonic Brown to help provide a fairytale finish to his first game in a Lehigh Valley uniform.
However, the 2010 season has become more of a horror show for the IronPigs.
Batting as the potential tying run in the top of the ninth inning, the much-heralded outfielder, promoted from Double-A Reading earlier in the day, went down swinging Friday night to end a 2-1 loss at Durham, the IronPigs' fourth straight since opening their eight-game southern road trip with a win in Norfolk.
The setback also sent the IronPigs to a season-low 16 games under .500 at 29-45 and dropped their one-run record to a mind-boggling 7-22.
Brown had a line-drive single in his first Triple-A at-bat in the second inning off Jeremy Hellickson (10-2) but went hitless in his last three at-bats as the IronPigs were held to only four hits.
Another newcomer, Greg Dobbs, went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.
Lehigh Valley had two runners on with nobody out in the second when Brown followed a Cody Ransom single with his hit. But after both runners advanced on a groundout by Melvin Dorta, Hellickson struck out Paul Hoover and got Brian Bocock on a flyout to end the threat.
Dorta's leadoff double led to an unearned run in the fourth when Willy Taveras' ground ball went between the legs of Durham third baseman Joe Dillon, allowing Paul Hoover to score from second and leaving two runners on base. However, Hellickson, who allowed all four hits and just the one unearned run in six innings to lower his ERA to 2.19, struck out Dobbs and John Mayberry Jr. for two of his second strikeouts to end that threat.
Former IronPig R.J. Swindle pitched two scoreless innings behind Hellickson before Winston Abreu got the final three outs for his seventh save.
Durham (44-30) scored the only runs it would need in the first inning against Nate Bump (6-4), who moved up a day after the Phillies recalled scheduled starter Nelson Figueora. The Bulls opened their half of the inning with four straight singles off the right-hander, including RBI singles by Justin Ruggiano and Dan Johnson, and it took a rare 5-4-2 double play, with Dorta throwing home to cut down Ruggiano after getting a force out at second, for Bump to escape further damage.
Bump, who was originally scheduled to get an extra day's rest after being knocked out of his last start by a line drive, allowed just two other baserunners on singles over the rest of his seven innings.

Carney and Murfet win first Madison of the season
Friday night was truly a night for the young and the old.
Clay Murfet and Jame Carney comprised just one component of the young and the old when they teamed to win the Mike Walter Madison Challenge at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center on Friday night.
Carney, at racing age 42, is twice the age of Murfet, but showed off the snap in his legs in front of more than 1.700 people at the velodrome. The pair combined to win 10 of 14 sprints in the 40-lap and 100-lap Madisons to put their name on the Mike Walter Madison trophy.
"The idea was to line up Jame for the sprint because he's the fastest guy here," said Murfet, a 21-year-old from the Australian island of Tasmania. "He's also the oldest, but he's still the fastest."
The evening also featured the always-fun All-Star Finals of the Red Robin/Marty Nothstein Bicycle Racing League also took center stage on Friday night. Season-long standings and awards were announced before the racing action, and additional awards were up for grabs in age-group racing categories for age groups 9-11, 12-14, and 12-17.
But the feature event truly belonged to Carney, the old man of the track who is originally from Annandale, N.J. and grew up racing in Trexlertown.
"My strategy was just to get Clay in at the right time," Carney said of the sprint and chase mode that makes Madison racing so crafty and dangerous. "I knew I could position Clay properly, and he's fast enough to compete with these guys."
Carney and Murfet won all but the final sprint in the evening's finale, the 100-lap Madison.
"I wanted to win it," Murfet said, "but it was nice to be able to salute the crowd at the end."
Courtney Krasley competed in BRL for the second straight year and found out she like it so much that her family is purchasing a Fuji track bike so she can continue racing now the BRL has concluded for the summer. In fact, Krasley, who will attend middle school in the Parkland School District, plans on racing junior nationals when they come to the Valley Preferred Cycling Center next month.
Krasley started out in the 9-11 age group of the grassroots program that produced two junior national road champions in Bend, Ore. this week, but moved up to the 12-17 age group to further test the waters.
"It's a lot of fun and it's something I want to continue to do, said Krasley, who raced for Team Knowledge. The BRL team names come from Red Robin's four core values: Honor, Integrity, Knowledge and Fun.
Fun was certainly evident for 11-year-old Parker Jones. The New Tripoli resident had a smile bigger than the moon when he came out of Turn 4, in the lead of the boys 9-11 3-lap scratch race. Jones' smile got bigger and bigger as he sprinted to the finish line for his win, cheered on by the professional racers and the Friday night crowd.
Jones has been racing at the velodrome in various developmental programs since he was seven, and has participated in BRL the past three years.
In women's racing, defending Rider of the Year Laura McCaughey of Australia won the women's 15-lap scratch race and the super sprint elimination to show off her racing chops for the second straight week and season.
"My coach was giving me a hard time," she said, "because I said I feel tired. We had hard training this morning. He said, 'You should always feel tired!' We've got more fire power in the field tonight, and we're trying to get even more riders from New Zealand to come over."
Junior nationals weighing in: Kutztown's Zack Noonan, racing for Young Medallists/Dual Temp, placed fourth in the junior men's 17-18 time trial at the USA Cycling Road Nationals in Bend, Ore. Bailey Semian of Mertztown, riding for Chester County Cycling, placed fifth in the women's 15-16 time trial.
