FROM KEITH GROLLER
Former Dieruff High, Kutztown University and Buffalo Bills star Andre Reed will join the Kansas City Chiefs coaching staff in training camp after accepting a Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship position.
Reed, who has been a Hall of Fame finalist for the last seven years. confirmed the news on The NFL Network on Saturday.
In Kansas City, Reed will be on the staff headed by former Eagles coach Andy Reid, who is starting his first season with the Chiefs after being fired by the Eagles after 14 seasons.
Reed visited the Eagles training camp at Lehigh last summer and offered his condolences to Reid shortly after the death of the coach's 29-year-old son Garrett.
"I wanted to give my condolences to Coach Reid and his family," Andre said in a Morning Call story last August. "I've known him for years .. since I played against his teams when he was coaching with Mike Holmgren in Green Bay. I made it a point to try and see him. He's a great coach, a great guy. The entire NFL family rallied together to support his family."
Reed's stint in KC is by the byproduct of a NFL initiative to promote minorities.
The Bill Walsh NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship is an annual program administered by the NFL Management Council and NFL Player Engagement.
The program's objective is to use NFL team's training camps, offseason workout programs and minicamps to give talented minority coaches opportunities to:
- Observe
- Participate
- Gain Experience
- Ultimately gain a full-time NFL coaching position
Designed as a vocational tool to increase the number of full-time NFL minority coaches, all 32 NFL teams participate in the program on an annual basis. Specific aspects of the program (including hiring, salary and coaching duties) are administered on a team-by-team basis. No elements of the Fellowship are mandated by the NFL office, but several "best practices" have been strongly recommended including:
- Participants are hired for the duration of training camp, including all pre-season games.
- Clubs are encouraged to hire a minimum of four participants.
Reed will be back in the Lehigh Valley from June 22-24 for his fourth annual Andre Reed Foundation Golf Tournament. Some major former NFL standouts are expected to be here for the event which begins on June 22 with a poker tournament at the Sands Bethlehem.
