A look at eight years of Lehigh Valley Conference boys basketball

A couple of weeks ago, we looked at the history of Lehigh Valley Conference football.

With the high school basketball season set to begin on Friday night, I figured it might be a good time to look back at the first eight seasons of Lehigh Valley Conference boys basketball.

Each year, league statisticians Bob and Pat Whirl, put out wonderful books with all of the numbers.

So, to put together a history of the LVC, I just crunched the win-loss numbers of eight seasons and listed them based on overall record, LVC record, winning seasons and league titles.

Here we go:

1. Liberty 144-79 overall (.646) 85-51 LVC 1 LVC title, 2 D11 6-2 W/L/.500 seasons

2. Easton 134-75 overall (.641) 87-49 LVC 1 LVC title, 1 D11 6-2 W/L/.500

3. Parkland 137-82 overall (.626) 88-48 LVC 0 LVC titles, 2 D11 6-1-1 W/L.500

4. Allen 128-81 overall (.6124) 80-56 LVC 1 LVC, 1 D11 6-2 W/L/.500

Note: Jim Hutnik has the best record of any coach in LVC history. Hutnik is 164-59 overall in the eight seasons (the first three at Becahi, the last five at Easton). He is 104-32 in LVC games.

The breakdown: 65-23 in three seasons at Becahi, 42-12 in the LVC; 99-36 in five seasons at Easton, 62-20 in the LVC while at the Red Rovers.

Again, those totals for Hutnik are just since the LVC began.

Note No. 2: Whitehall is the only team to repeat as league champs.

Note No. 3: The teams to advance the deepest in the state tournament were Parkland, reaching the state final, in 2003-04 and Liberty reaching the state semis in 2009-10
