Ex-IronPigs Mathieson, Brown tops in Phillies' farm system for 2010

FROM THE MORNING CALL

Two former Lehigh Valley IronPigs were named Tuesday afternoon as winners of the Paul Owens Award in the Phillies minor league system for 2010, by Chuck LaMar, assistant general manager for player development and scouting.

Right-hander Scott Mathieson and outfielder Domonic Brown will receive the awards for best pitcher and player, respectively, during a pre-game presentation on Sunday, when the Phillies play the Nationals at Citizens Bank Park. Both players who were originally drafted by the Phillies, played with the Triple-A IronPigs this season and are now on the Phils' roster as they battle for a playoff spot.

The award was instituted in 1986 and is named for the late Owens, who spent 48 years with the Phillies as a scout, farm director, general manager, manager and senior adviser.

Mathieson, 26, had a 3-6 record with 26 saves and a 2.80 ERA in his 54 games this season with the IronPigs. He struck out 83 batters in 64.1 innings and has appeared in two games for the Phillies.

Brown, 23, hit for a combined .327 in his 93 games with the Double-A Reading Phillies and the IronPigs. He had 22 doubles, four triples, 20 home runs, 68 RBIs and 17 stolen bases, and was the starting right fielder for the U.S. team in the All-Star Futures Game in Anaheim, Calif., in July.

Brown was named the midseason No. 1 overall prospect in the minor leagues by Baseball America magazine in July and made his major league debut on July 28. He has hit .214 with three doubles, two home runs and 12 RBIs in 56 at-bats this season.

This is the fourth time in the 25-year existence of the award that both winners are in the major leagues at the time of the presentation.
