After winning the pregame coin toss, Easton deferred as usual.

The move gave the Red Rover defense the chance to take the field first. It left the Fisher Field turf with a feeling of vindication after playing its worst game of the year last week.

Easton forced three turnovers and held Phillipsburg to 106 yards of total offense on 12 possessions. The second of those turnovers, an interception by senior linebacker Justin Best with 6:52 to go, set up a game-clinching touchdown drive as Easton captured a 16-7 win in the 107th edition of the schools' Thanksgiving Day football rivalry.

EASTON – Easton Area’s Kyle Bambary rushed for 133-yards to lead the Red Rovers over Phillipsburg in the 107th Annual Turkey Day game at Fisher Field Thursday morning.

After giving up 42 points last weekend to Parkland, it was Easton’s defense that set the tone today. On P’Burg’s first drive of the game, Cameron Casciole sacked Phillipsburg’s Tyler Troxell to end their drive.

After the P’Burg punt, Easton went 45-yards on four plays to take a 7-0 lead over Phillipsburg. Shane Simpson had runs of 5 and 23 and Bambary finished the drive off with a two-yard touchdown run with 7:40 left in the first quarter.

Late in the first half, Easton’s kicker Matt Semanick had a 26-yard field goal hit the left upright. Easton still led 7-0 with 2:43 remaining in the first half.

Phillipsburg’s Joe Maso fumbled the ball and Joey Ford recovered it on the P’Burg 33.

Easton had to settle for a 25-yard field goal by Semanick. The Red Rovers went into halftime with a 10-0 lead.

Easton dominated the stats at halftime with 174 total yards to 41.

In the third quarter neither offense was doing much, until Easton decided to go on 4th down and one from its 30-yard line. Phillipsburg’s defense came up with the stop with 2:52 left in the third quarter.

Anthony Guarino had an eight-yard touchdown run that cut Easton’s lead to 10-7 with 0:45 seconds left in the third quarter.

With 6:52 remaining in the game, Easton’s Justin Best intercepted a Troxell pass on the P’Burg 44.

The Red Rovers capped off a 10-play, 44-yard drive to go up 16-7. On fourth-and-goal, Quarterback Brad Wilkins hit Shane Simpson for a 3-yard touchdown pass with 2:29 left in the game.

Easton’s Michael McLeane forced a fumble on Troxell and Nick Raso recovered it on P’Burg 45. Easton ran out the clock to preserve the win. This is their third straight win over P’Burg.

NOTE: Easton’s defense did a good job today. They gave up 106 total yards. On offense they had 293 total yards.

Easton’s Kyle Bambary had 133-yards and one touchdown. Shane Simpson had 85 yards rushing. Quarterback Brad Wilkins had 66-yards passing and one touchdown.

P’Burg was led by Joe Maso who rushed for 69-yards. Quarterback Tyler Troxell passed for 62 yards.

Catasauqua High School's Paryss Marshall had a first-half touchdown reception and an interception return for a score, both of 67 yards, as the Rough Riders topped Northampton43-28 today at Muhlenberg College's Scotty Wood Stadium.

Devin Flores rushed for three scores for Catasauqua (13-1), which shut Northampton out in the first half.

Last night on Thanksgiving Eve they aired classic sitcom Thanksgiving episodes including WKRP in Cincinnati's "Turkey's Away!" TV Land has a Laugh More-a-thon Weekend with many classics and modern classics including I Love Lucy, The Andy Griffith Show, Everybody Loves Raymond, King of Queens, Cosby Show and more. MTV2 will feature a Boy Meets World marathon today from 2pm-7pm. TBS will once again present a Friends marathon today, Thanksgiving Day, from 10am-5pm. If you can't watch during the day, then Nick at Nite will have a Friends marathon for you at night from 10pm-6am. Family is the most important thing on a holiday like Thanksgiving, and USA Network will bring us a marathon of Modern Family today from 9:30am-1:30am! WE tv will have all the Thanksgiving episodes of Roseanne and Will & Grace airing from 10am-4pm today in marathon block. And New York City is lucky to have a marathon of The Honeymooners for the second straight year on Thanksgiving, today on WPIX from 11am-3pm, sandwiched in between two airings of the movie March of the Wooden Soldiers! Also in New York, we get the second straight year of Taxi on the Day After Thanksgiving, Friday from 9am-9pm on WLNY TV 55/10. HS football picks while spending my 33rd straight Thanksgiving covering a game

Happy Thanksgiving.

This is one of those holidays steeped in tradition where you tend to do the same thing year after year and for the 33rd straight year I will be covering a high school football game. For the 22nd time it's the Northampton-Catasauqua game, but for the first time it's at Muhlenberg College.

And while I was just seven years old the last time the Konkrete Kids and Rough Riders played at Muhlenberg in 1968 and can't really remember whether I was at one of these games as I kid, I know my grandmother (Northampton, Class of 1934) definitely attended some games at Muhlenberg as did some of my other family members. So, there's a nostalgic boost to help get me through this very cold morning.

I list the games I've covered below and realize that clearly Northampton-Catty has become my tradition and while most of the buzz on this day is generated on College Hill in Easton, I am fine with doing this series. A couple of years ago, I thought that perhaps the rivalry could be nearing an end because of Northampton's dominance, but that perception has certainly changed in the last two years.

One thing to note is that my wife went with me to the first Thanksgiving game I covered at Upper Perk. That's when we were dating and students at Penn State. I was actually not an employee of The Morning Call at that point (the only nine-month period since Sept. 1979 that I wasn't an employee). But then sports editor Paul Reinhard used me as a freelancer while I was home on my break from Penn State.

By the time the next Thanksgiving rolled around, we were married and you know how things change when you're married. She has never gone to another Thanksgiving Day game with me, at least not that I can remember, although she does still go along on some of the longer trips I make to cover Lehigh, like the Colgate trip two weeks ago.

As for predicting the games, I was 3-0 with the playoff predictions last weekend, bringing my record to 197-54 on the season.

Now today's predictions:

Catasauqua 48, Northampton 28 -- A lot of speculation about how Catty will approach this one. There's no doubt in my mind that the Roughies will go all-out even with Imhotep two days away, and there's no doubt that they will score a lot against a beleaguered Northampton defense. The K-Kids will score, too, but Catty will take advantage of the sure footing on the artificial turf at Scotty Wood Stadium and keep scoring thanks to their speed advantage.

Phillipsburg 27, Easton 21 -- The Red Rovers were embarrassed at Parkland last week and they will rebound with a lot of pride. But the Stateliners are on a roll.

Stroudsburg 20, ES South 17 -- Like Easton, South didn't look very good in its last outing, a 31-0 blanking by Easton. So, the Cavaliers will be playing for pride as much as anything else. The Mounties feel they should have won the first meeting between these two when quarterback Mike Nikorak wasn't healthy. Stroudsburg gets a chance to prove that even though it didn't three-peat as league champs, it's still a top program in the Mountain Valley Conference.

Pennridge 19, Quakertown 14 -- A pair of 7-4 teams, but teams seemingly headed in different directions.  The Rams began 4-0, but went 3-4 over their last seven. The Panthers won three, lost four and then came back with four more wins. Neither has played in a long time, so this a version of the Hunger Games where the more motivated team will come out on top. Still think Pennridge has the better resume.

Stopped in to see Doug Snyder and his Allen Canaries as part of our 18 teams in 18 days tour, but this was not at Sewards Gym. That gym has been out of commission since July.

Instead, I checked out the Canaries at Trexler Middle School.

Unlike most other stops where I saw teams just shooting around, I actually watched the Canaries scrimmage for about a half-hour and what struck me was how much the team was enjoying just playing the game.

And it also struck me that Snyder was having a lot of fun watching and stopping the action to offer some instruction. The kids respond to him. They want to get better and there's no better way than to listen to Snyder.

The last couple of years Snyder (seen below surrounded by his team) has not had as much fun after that great District 11 championship team in 2010-11 led by Jalen Cannon. There have been a variety of internal problems and disciplinary issues, but that seems to be all gone. Snyder talked about having good kids in the summer and that has carried over into the start of the season.

Whether that harmony translates into wins remains to be seen. With Tyler Kohl enrolling at Dieruff, and both CCHS and Emmaus loaded with talent, the LVC West is clearly the league's best division.

Regardless, Allen is going to be competitive and win its share of games and should at the very least qualify for districts.

ALLEN

Coach: Doug Snyder (17th season, 232-180)

Last year: 11-12 overall, 6-8 LVC.

Postseason: Lost to Easton 55-50 in the first round of the District 11 4A tournament.

New to staff: After 16 seasons loyal assistants Bob Freed and Mark Smurda have retired. Dave Peters, a fifth-grade teacher at Washington Elementary School who played for Brad Pensyl at Pocono Mountain when it was one school and then at Kings College, has come aboard as the varsity assistant. Justin Rupelli has been promoted from freshman to JV coach and Randy Atiyeh has joined the staff as the freshman coach.  

Scrimmages: Have already scrimmaged Norristown and will travel to Conestoga at 5 p.m. Monday for a tri-scrimmage with Constitution.

Openers: Play Northampton at 3:30 Sat., Dec. 7 at Freedom in the Yasso-Rothrock event; host Pocono Mountain West on Dec. 7; host Emmaus on Dec. 14 at 3:30 in the Donmoyer floor dedication ceremony.

Players to watch: Sr. G Daiyon Barnett; Sr. G J.J. Davis; Sr. G H.R. Smith; Sr. F Isaiah Palmer; Sr. F  Kobe Texter; Sr. F Edwin Gonzalez; Jr. F Bryson Walton; Jr. G Jameire Myers; Jr. F Isiah Gray; Jr. F Rico Santana; Jr. F Jahi Shepard; Jr. G Koi Kostic. Freshman Taleek Williams transferred to Becahi after spending the summer at Allen, but has since returned. Williams is considered one of the best incoming freshman players in the area, but Snyder has yet to promote him to the varsity.           

What's to like: The fact that Allen is finally supposed to get in its own gym on Friday morning. "I've had open gyms and now practice here at Trexler and I have had to carry around three bags of balls," Snyder said. "I've had three bgas of balls in my car, and then it gets cold, so I have to bring them into my living room and then lug them back into the car. I've been like a nomad." The new Sewards floor costs $370,000 and is the result of leaky roof that revealed its holes during a major July storm.

What's to worry about: Looking at the Canaries on the floor the other night, there's plenty of quickness, shooting ability and unity. However, there's not an abundance of size and bulk inside. The Canaries are going to have to be fundamentally sound to get rebounds because there's no Jalen Cannon there to sweep everything off the glass. Williams will undoubtedly be joining the team at some point and it's going to be interesting to see how his return affects chemistry.

Quotable: "I have six seniors and six juniors, so I have some experience and leadership," Snyder said. "I have no real big names and I have no marquee players, but there's a certain camaraderie, a certain amount of chemistry and a level of intensity. That comes with having a good number of juniors and seniors. It is a really nice group of kids and we've got a good group of guards and guards are so important in this league."
