Nazareth's annual July Fourth kazoo parade is taking a hiatus this year.
Tina Smith, president of the Nazareth-Bath Area Chamber of Commerce, said the annual event was canceled because professional kazoo player Abbe Graber can't make the trip. In 2011, the borough secured the 56-year-old Graber, also known as "Miss G," of Woodstock, New York, as grand marshal and has asked her back ever since.
In addition, a group called the Dream Kids that performed a song and dance program at the parade has disbanded, Smith said. She also is worried about poor turnout, though hundreds have taken part in the event each year.
"It is a Friday, so we think people may be taking a long weekend out of town," Smith said of the July Fourth holiday.
Smith said the borough plans to resume the event July 4, 2015, with a larger kazoo parade in conjunction with Nazareth's 275th anniversary festivities.
During the annul kazoo parade, upward of 500 to 600 people would play patriotic songs on kazoos donated by Lafayette Ambassador Bank. Others performed and local military veterans were invited to speak.
Mayor Carl Strye Jr. has urged residents each year to come out to show their patriotism.
