FROM KEITH GROLLER
t was a whirlwind couple of days for Northampton High and Lehigh University graduate Billy Boyko, but it all ended well.
Boyko attended a tryout camp for the Carolina Panthers last Thursday through Saturday. He flew back to the Lehigh Valley on Saturday night, went to one of his favorite places, Maple Grove Raceway, on Sunday and then went to work at Mack Trucks on Monday where he's an intern while pursuing his masters degree at Lehigh.
While at work on Monday, Boyko got a call from his agent saying that he needed to get back on a plane and return to Carolina.
The Panthers evidently liked what they saw from the hard-hitting, hustling linebacker and he signed a two-year deal with the team on Tuesday morning.
Various media outlets first reported the news and his father, Bill, confirmed all that had transpired over the last few days.
"It was a little crazy," Bill Boyko said. "But he's excited because he's worked so hard for this opportunity."
Boyko will participate in the Panthers OTA (Organized Team Activities) May 27-29, June 3-5 and June 9-12.
He reportedly caught the eye of former Eagles defensive coordinator and current Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott.
Boyko was in the Raiders' training camp last season and was one of the last cuts.
He also had a look with the Cardinals last season and several teams, including the Eagles, have contacted Boyko.
All the while he has continued to work out with Erick Markovcy of Lehigh's athletic training staff.
