Dawud Abdur-Rahkman, father of Central Catholic star and Morning Call Player of the Year, Muhammad Ali Abdur-Rahkman, confirmed that his son has been invited and has accepted a visit to the University of Michigan campus this weekend.
Dawud said that travel arrangements were being finalized and it's a little complicated because of the holiday weekend. He may be arriving in Ann Arbor on Thursday night.
Michigan, coming off a 28-9 season that ended with a loss to Kentucky in the regional finals and one step shy of the Final Four, is losing two guards to the NBA Draft. At a press conference on Tuesday, both Glenn Robinson III and Nik Stauskas announced they will forgo their final two years of eligibility and submit the necessary paperwork to declare for early entry into the 2014 NBA Draft set for late June.
Because of the departures of Robinson and Stauskas, Michigan coach John Beilein is in the market for a 6-foot-4 guard who can do all of the things that Muhammad can do.
Beilein spoke personally to Dawud Abdur-Rahkman about how much he thinks the four-time all-stater would fit into his program and that he would likely get immediate playing time.
Unlike some coaches who merely assemble All-American teams and then have guys leave after one season or two, Beilein has a reputation for taking players with slightly less credentials and turning them into All-Americans.
Beilein loves coacing what he calls "gym rats" and Abdur-Rahkman fits that description.
Abdur-Rahkman made a visit to Rice University in Houston last weekend that "went great," according to Dawud Abdur-Rahkman.
However, it was not great enough for Muhammad to commit.
"When it feels right, he will know it and he will make his decision," his father said. "It's not about taking all five visits and stringing people along. When a situation is right, he will make his decision then and not wait."
