John Donmoyer, the winningest boys basketball coach in Lehigh Valley history, will be recognized by having the court at Allen High School's Sewards Gym named in his honor on Saturday, Dec. 14. Donmoyer's Moravian Academy team will play Pen Argyl, coached this year by Kyle Hutnik, in a 1 p.m. nonleague game.
The floor dedication ceremony will take place after the Moravian Academy game at approximately 2:45 and then Allen will play Emmaus in a Lehigh Valley Conference game set to start at 3:30.
Donmoyer worked with Milo Sewards for many years, serving as his JV and assistant coach. The two were close friends, so it's fitting that the Donmoyer and Sewards names will be linked.
Donmoyer coached at Allen for 23 seasons, 1974-1997, going 423-226 and winning five East Penn Conference and six District 11 championships. He also guided the Canaries to back-to-back PIAA 3A East titles in 1979 and 1980.
Sewards, by the way, coached for 24 seasons and went 408-167 with nine East Penn League and four District 11 crowns. His Canaries won the 1950 state championship in his first season in charge.
After retiring as a teacher and coach at Allen, Donmoyer went to Moravian Academy and has coached there for 16 seasons.
At the private school, he has posted a record of 189-186 bringing his overall win total to 612.
Prior to Donmoyer's arrival, the Lions had qualified for the District tournament just four times in school history. Since he arrived, Moravian Academy has qualied for the postseason 13 times in 16 years.
