Mike Birling woke up on the morning of Sept. 13, 2012, to a nightmare.
For a little over a year, the Durham Bulls general manager and his staff had been preparing to host the Gildan Triple-A Baseball National Championship. Now, on the morning of the nationally televised event, a soaking rain had settled over the Triangle region of North Carolina, threatening to wash away all those best-laid plans and hard work.
