Lehigh University product and undrafted free-agent wide receiver Ryan Spadola may have clinched his spot on the New York Jets' 53-man roster with his performance on Saturday night against the Giants at MetLife Stadium in the battle of New York.
Spadola hauled in a 22-yard TD pass from Matt Simms with 2:02 remaining in the fourth quarter to give the Jets a 21-18 lead. It was Spadola's first touchdown catch of the preseason.
And then in overtime, Spadola went 70 yards with a catch-and-run from Simms that carried to the Giants 20-yard line and set up the game-winning, 32-yard field goal by Billy Cundiff in a 24-21 Jets win.
Of course, all of the talk after the game was about Matt Sanchez's injury and why Rex Ryan even had him in the game after Geno Smith's three-interception performance.
But Spadola, who has been impressive throughout training camp and has become sort of a media darling since he's from New Jersey, may have finalized his spot on the opening-day roster.
His three catches for 110 yards on Saturday gives him seven receptions for 169 yards in the Jets' three preseason games.
The Jets close out the preseason schedule on Thursday night against the Eagles.
