Ken Fang of Fang’s Bites and I are back with a new edition of Sports Media weekly.
This week we are joined by Pete Dougherty, sports media columnistfor the Albany Times Union.
We begin the show looking at the reaction of the announcement earlier this week by NBA forward Jason Collins that he is gay. We discuss how such an announcement has become more accepted in our society while also touching upon the reactions of ESPN’s Chris Broussard and CBS Sports announcer Tim Brando.
As the Collins story was unfolding Monday morning ESPN was still infatuated with the release by the Jets of quarterback Tim Tebow.
We then put a wrap of last week’s NFL Draft examining the ratings boost for ESPN and the NFL Network. Ken and I still do not agree with the networks’ ban of no tipping picks via Twitter. Both networks say they will do so again next year.
We wrap-up the news segment looking at NBC’s plans to again televise all NHL Playoff games nationally and recapping an awkward moment last night by Fox Sports Prime Ticket which had the dilemma of giving fans double box coverage of both the NHL Playoff overtime game between the Kings and Blues and the start of the NBA Playoff game featuring the Clippers and Grizzlies.
