FROM KEITH GROLLER
Matt Cohen can't stay away from the game of football. One year removed from being a member of the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks indoor team as a player, the former Central Catholic and Lehigh University standout has been promoted to the team's defensive coordinator.
He will replace Kevin O'Hanlon, who stepped down to focus on a personal matter, according to a team release.
"There are few others I respect more in the professional football world then Coach Kevin O’Hanlon,” Steelhawks GM Mike Clark said. “He is a future head coach in these ranks, and has been instrumental in our success over the past three seasons, which included a top three defensive unit last season in the IFL. He will always be family to us, but we are confident in his grooming of coach Cohen to lead our defense in the second half of this season as we attempt to make a strong playoff push.”
Cohen was a standout two-way performer at CCHS and was an All-American linebacker at Lehigh, finishing his career in 2009 when he was the Patriot League's Defensive Player of the Year. He played on the first two Steelhawks teams before joining the defensive staff this year. In 2012, his last season as a player, Cohen made over 100 tackles on defense and had two rushing TDs on offense. He was recognized as a first-team all-Ironman selection by the Indoor Football League.
Cohen does have coaching experience, having coached the Bethlehem Catholic running backs last season.
He makes his debut as defensive coordinator at 4 p.m. Sunday when the Steelhawks (2-4) face the Columbus Lions at Stabler Arena.
