North Hunterdon High School graduate Jess Pellechio will be starting in the backcourt for the Virginia Commonwealth women's basketball team this afternoon when the Rams host Rhode Island in an Atlantic 10 Conference game.
The freshman will be playing in front of a national TV audience. Tip-off is 2 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
Pellechio, the 2010 Express-Times Player of the Year, has appeared in 23 games with 19 starts for VCU (10-17, 3-9 A-10). She's second on the team in minutes played (30.1 mpg), scoring (10.6 ppg), steals (52) and first in 3-point field goals (64-for-206). Pellechio earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors in December after pouring in 30 points in a win over Missouri-Kansas City. In that game, Pellechio shot 10-of-20 overall and 9-of-18 from 3-point range. She finished one 3-pointer shy of tying the school record. She also scored 20 points against UMBC and 16 against St. Bonaventure.
