FROM KEITH GROLLER
n case you missed it in today's print edition of The Morning Call, here's a look at boys basketball player of the week, the Top 10 and the top-25 scoring leaders:
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
JUSTIN AUNGST, Salisbury
Salisbury coach Jason Weaver said that since the calendar turned to 2013, junior Justin Aungst had picked up his game. Then he went to the team’s scorebook to verify his comment.
“Over the past seven games he has averaged 14.7 points per game and before that he was averaging just 6.8,” Weaver said. “We told him to be more aggressive and look for his shot more, and he’s doing that.”
Aungst made his first big splash as a freshman in the 2011 Colonial League semis when he scored 10 points to help the Falcons upset Bangor. A couple of months later, as a pitcher, he was the catalyst to Salisbury winning the District 11 baseball title and advancing all the way to the state championship game.
He can handle the pressure and the workload.
“On last year’s team, he started for us, but didn’t look to score and made his mark by doing all of the little things … setting screens, diving on the floor for loose balls. … “ Weaver said. “He’s still doing that kind of stuff, but this year he needs to score more. “
Aungst, a six-foot junior, scored a career-high 22 on Tuesday night in the Falcons’ rout of Northern Lehugh.
“He’s a leader more by example than by words,” Weaver said. “He doesn’t get nervous in tight situations. He just goes after it all of the time.”
