FROM THE MORNING CALL
When Bethlehem Catholic needed someone to carry its offense early, Kalista Walters shouldered the load.
When the Golden Hawks needed a late basket to quell a Nazareth rally, she showed she can distribute the basketball too.
Bethlehem Catholic was clinging to a two-point lead Tuesday night when Walters found herself with the ball in the frontcourt for a 2-on-1 chance. Rather than force a shot, she fired a bounce pass to Cecilia Perez for an uncontested layup that gave the Golden Hawks room to breathe.
Perez converted another layup with just over one minute to play as Bethlehem Catholic held off Nazareth for a 51-45 win in a Lehigh Valley Conference girls basketball game between the teams ranked Nos. 1 and 2 in The Morning Call coverage area.
By ending Nazareth's six-game winning streak, Bethlehem Catholic (13-1 overall, 7-0 LVC) collected its second win in as many tries against a likely LVC playoff qualifier. The Golden Hawks whipped Central Catholic 45-23 a week ago when those teams were ranked 1-2 in the area.
