Looking back at Lehigh's amazing win over Liberty in Lynchburg

First downs: Liberty 23, Lehigh 9 Net rushing: Liberty 241 yards, Lehigh 106 Net passing: Liberty 247 yards, Lehigh 195 Total yards: Liberty 488 yards, Lehigh 301 Total plays: Liberty 78, Lehigh 44. Possession time: Liberty 42:25, Lehigh 17:35. How in the world did they win this game, 28-26, you wonder? Big plays and few mistakes. Six big plays in particular. 1. Tom Mahoney's interception on Liberty's first drive. 2. A 30-yard pass to fullback Zach Hayden last set up Lehigh's first score. 3. 58-yard pass to Ryan Spadola that set up Lehigh's second touchown. 4. Michael Colvin's 68-yard touchdown run on third-and-three at Lehigh's 32 midway through the fourth quarter. 5. Billy Boyko's interception and return off the Gabe Johnson tip for a touchdown. 6. Bryan Andrews' breakup of the two-point conversion pass by Liberty. And here's another key to victory: Lehigh playing in a loud, hostile environment in front of 17,139 fans, had just four penalties for 27 yards. The home team had 12 for 83. Lehigh also didn't allow a quarterback sack, but got three. And Liberty also had the game's only two turnovers -- the two aforementioned interceptions. In all honesty, Lehigh has not come close to putting together a complete game, and frankly, could be 1-3 right now. But they're not. The Mountain Hawks are 4-0 for the first time since 2001. Through these four games they have shown resiliency, character and heart. If the execution ever catches up to those other three elements, this could again be a very special season on South Mountain.
