FROM THE MORNING CALL
The District 11 committee is scheduled to meet Tuesday afternoon for an eligibility hearing involving Freedom, Liberty and Pius X.
District 11 chairman and Northwestern athletic director Jason Zimmerman confirmed in an email Friday afternoon the hearing would take place, though he could not say which sports or students are involved.
Pius X had several football players leave its program after last season, starting with the departure of star quarterback A.J. Long in May. There is a possibility Tuesday’s hearing will center on some of those football players who left Pius X after Long’s departure and wound up at Freedom and Liberty. Pius X athletic director Joe Disidore did not immediately return a call seeking comment on the nature of Tuesday’s hearing.
The most notable player to move from Pius X to Liberty or Freedom is Class A all-state wide receiver Boise Ross. He was at Freedom earlier in the summer before being enrolled at Liberty. A Bethlehem Area School District official said earlier this month a miscommunication caused Ross, a Bethlehem resident, to originally be enrolled at Freedom though his residence dictated he should attend Liberty. It is not known whether Ross is one of the players whose eligibility is in question.
Tuesday’s hearing, which will be held at 4 p.m. at the Nazareth Area School District’s Board Room, will be open to the public unless one of the participating schools, students, parents or people representing the schools or students ask for the hearing to be closed, according to Zimmerman. That will be determined before testimony begins Tuesday.
The high school football season is set to open next Friday, Aug. 31.
