Trio of freshmen help Whitehall take a step closer to first Lehigh Valley Conference softball playoff berth

http://www.lehighvalleylive.com/sports/index.ssf/2012/05/trio_of_freshmen_help_whitehal.html FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES Freshmen Allison Beltz, Abigail Nguyen and Karly Klein hit consecutive run-scoring base hits to cap a four-run first inning and Whitehall went on to a 6-2 victory over Nazareth today to take a step closer to its first Lehigh Valley Conference softball playoff berth. Junior Andrea Emery allowed six hits while striking out three and walking two to pick up the pitching victory for Whitehall (12-6 overall, 9-4 LVC), which starts just one senior. "I've been batting a little more lately so I'm starting to get more comfortable," said Beltz, who was used as a flex player at third base before getting her first chance to bat midway through the season. "This is pretty awesome being a freshman and playing varsity. I hope we can keep it going." Beltz added another RBI single in the second inning and Lauren Mortimer went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored for the Zephyrs. Whitehall's victory eliminated Nazareth, Easton and Northampton from LVC playoff contention. Bethlehem Catholic can still tie Whitehall for the wild card berth with a win over Easton and a Parkland win over the Zephyrs. Parkland and Liberty have clinched division titles and Emmaus needs one more win in its last two games to do the same.
