Lehigh Valley woman reaches quarterfinals of major tennis tournament in Madrid; plays world's No. 4 ranked player on Friday

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER Lehigh Township resident and professsional tennis player Varvara Lepchenko has won three matches and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Mutua Madrid Open, played on the blue clay in Spain. Lepchenko, who is ranked No. 77 in the world has defeated three higher ranked players, including No. 11 Francesca Schiavone of Italy 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 and joins with Serena Williams as the only two Americans left in the women's draw. Lepchenko's other wins came over Shahar Peer of Israel 7-6, 6-4 and Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain 6-1, 6-7, 6-4. Williams will play Maria Sharapova in her quarterfinal match today.
