No decision made on potential teacher, program cuts at Nazareth Area School District

http://www.lehighvalleylive.com/nazareth/index.ssf/2012/04/no_decision_made_on_potential.html FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES Though the Nazareth Area School District administration is standing by its recommendation of laying off or furloughing at least four high school teachers and eliminating an unspecified number of additional teachers and jobs through attrition, no formal presentation or new discussion was offered at Monday's district meeting. Already calling for a 2 percent tax increase, the $69.18 million 2012-2013 budget needs balancing to offset a $770,000 gap. On Monday, District Superintendent Victor Lesky did not offer any new information regarding the school's budget dilemma but assured those in attendance that the administration was doing all that it could to alleviate the deficit. "The administration is continuing to look at ways to do that," Lesky said of balancing the budget. Lesky said that budget conversation will intensify with a scheduled presentation next week on April 24. One way the administration plans to keep costs down is implementing a four-day summer work schedule for the third year in a row. All administrative employees and support staff will be subject to an eight-week, Monday through Thursday schedule during the summer months. Lesky said that in the first two years of the approved summer schedule, the district has saved between $25,000 and $35,000.
