KYW Newsradio Awards Richard Monetti Scholarship to Upper Moreland High School’s Gavin Lichtenstein

PHILADELPHIA – April 12,2012 – PHILADELPHIA, PA – KYW Newsradio has awarded the Richard Monetti Scholarship to Gavin Lichtenstein, a junior at Upper Moreland High School. Lichtenstein, one of the 171 students to graduate from KYW Newsradio’s 2012 Newstudies program, received a $2,000 scholarship. The award was announced at the Newstudies Graduation ceremony on April 11th at The Independence Seaport Museum.

The Richard Monetti Scholarship is awarded every year to the Newstudies student who demonstrates the most potential and enthusiasm throughout the six-week student reporter program. The scholarship is named for Richard Monetti, a 1986 Newstudies graduate who was killed in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988. Richard’s parents, Bob and Eileen Monetti were on hand to announce the winner of the 2012 Monetti Scholarship.

“KYW Newsradio is proud to continue the tradition of introducing high school students to the broadcast industry,” said Marc Rayfield, Senior Vice President & Market Manager of CBS Radio Philadelphia. “It’s also nice to be able to award those that did exceptionally well, and keep the memory of a former Newstudies graduate alive.”

KYW Newsradio 1060 has given high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to learn the inner workings of a major market radio and TV station through this program for over 45 years. On six consecutive Saturdays beginning in February, students from high schools throughout the Philadelphia region come to KYW to learn news writing, reporting, ethics and interviewing skills from station managers, editors, reporters, anchors. This year, students were also treated to guest speakers from CBS3 and 94 WIP Sportsradio.
