Sports Media Digest- March 14, 2012

Ratings for First Two NCAA Basketball Tourney Games Flat- Turner Sports reports that the overnight ratings for the first two games of the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournement averaged 0.9, slightly lower than the 1.0 rating for 2011. All four games of the First Four on truTV in 2011 averaged a 0.9 rating.

CBS/Turner Add Coaches to NCAA Tourny Analyst Pool- Both CBS Sports and Turner Sports have added a number of current college basketball coaches to serve as analysts during their coverage of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. Villanova head coach Jay Wright and St. John’s head coach Steve Lavin will serve as studio analysts during the tournament coverage on TBS, CBS, TNT and truTV. Wright’s first appearance will be tonight while Lavin debuts this weekend. Rutgers coach Mike Rice, George Mason coach Paul Hewitt, DePaul coach Oliver Purnell, Penn coach Jerome Allen and former Illinois coach Bruce Weber will be joining the crew at the CBS Sports Network beginning tomorrow.

NFL Network Sees Increased Viewership for First Day of Free Agency Coverage- The NFL Network ways 337,000 people, on average, watched its coverage yesterday of the first day of NFL free agency. That number is 5% above last year’s first day of free agency, which occurred on July 29, 2011 after the lockout.

NBA TV To Produce NBA Trade Deadline Programming- With the NBA trade deadline tomorrow, NBA TV will produce special programming to cover all the news from the teams’ front offices. Jared Greenberg will provide hourly updates beginning at 9:00a.m. ET. Vince Cellini, Dennis Scott, David Aldridge and Sekou Smith will host a two hour trade deadline special beginning at 2:00p.m. ET. Aldridge, Cellini, Scott and Smith will return to at 7:00p.m. ET to recap the trades and discuss the impact it will have on the teams the rest of the season. NBA TV reporters will be stationed a sites acorss the league in the event news breaks. The day will end at 10:00p.m. ET with GameTime at 10 p.m. featuring host Rick Kamla and guest analysts including Rick Fox.

MLS Action This Weekend On NBCSN- The NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) is set for its second regular season match of the Major League Soccer (MLS) campaign. This Sunday at 4:00p.m. ET NBCSN will have live coverage of the Colorado Rapids at the Philadelphia Union. Arlo White and Kyle Martino will call the game. Russ Thaler and Portland Timbers analyst Robbie Earle will host the pre-game, halftime and post-game segments live from Philadelphia.

All Time Sports Greats Will Help Tennis Channel Count Down the Top 100 of All Time- In preparation of counting down the top 100 tennis players of all time, the Tennis Channell will employ five superstars who are known for greatness in sports other than tennis. The five-part series, which begins March 19th at 7:00p.m. ET will feature a different superstar each night. Jack Nicklaus, Jerry Rice, Wayne Gretzky, Lisa Leslie and Carl Lewis will each hist an episode of the series.

NBCSN Preps for Fight Night 36: Zab Juda- The NBC Sports Network is getting fans prepared for its fight night between Zag Juda and Vernon Paris on Saturday March 24th by producing a behind-the-scenes series with Juda. Fight Night 36: Jab Zuda spends 36 hours with the boxer. The program debuts March 21st at 10:30p.m. ET. The bout between Juda and Paris will air on March 24th at 10:00p.m. ET.

HBO Has Middleweight Twin Bill This Saturday- HBO Sports will produce a middleweight championship double header this Saturday as Sergio Martinez takes on Matthew Macklin and Edwin Rodriguez battles Donovan George live from Madison Square Garden in New York. Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant and Emanuel Steward will be ringside for all the action beginning at 10:00p.m. ET
