Notre Dame freshman pitcher Gianna Koehler, who got an unexpected start when expected starter Sara Gaffney fell ill earlier in the day, stopped Southern Lehigh on five hits and the Crusaders made enough defensive plays behin her to post a 5-3 win over the Spartans on Friday afternoon at Green Pond.

Koehler struck out one and worked around six walks to post her first Colonial League victory.

Southern Lehigh (1-3 overall, 1-1 CL) had baserunners in every inning but the second, but didn't score until the seventh when Katie Tankred (2-for-3) doubled in two and scored on an error.

With runners at first and third and two out, Shelby Drissel tried to steal to get in scoring position but was thrown out by freshman catcher Kelsey Simpkins for the game's final out.

Five different girls had hits for the Crusaders, including freshmen Faith Carson and Megan Knarr who came off the bench to deliver a triple and a double respectively in the bottom of the sixth to pick up an important insurance run.

Knarr, by the way, is the daughter of Jeff Knarr, a longtime area football coach who is now the head coach at King's College.

Notre Dame improved to 2-1 overall, 1-1 in the league.
