Nazareth Area High School grad Zach Horan pulls an upset in first round of NCAA tournament wrestling

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

As he stood at the center of Mat 5 at the Scotttrade Center here in St. Louis, Zach Horan pumped his fist in triumph.

And why not?

The Nazareth Area High School graduate had just pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the first day of action at the NCAA Division I wrestling championship.

Horan, a Central Michigan freshman and unseeded at 133 pounds, scored a takedown in the very last seconds of his first-round match for a 5-4 stunner over No. 12 seed Bryan Ortenzio of Pennsylvania.

Horan will meet No. 5 seed Joe Colon in a second-round match tonight.

Other early area winners in Session I included the two defending national champions, Easton Area High School graduate Jordan Oliver, who won by fall in 2:07 over Penn State's Frank Martellotti, and Blair Academy grad and High Bridge resident Kellen Russell, who defeated Nick Hucke of Missouri 6-1 at 141. Both are top seeds.

Hackettstown resident Frank Perrelli, wrestling for Cornell as the No. 6 seed at 125, also won his first-round bout.

Blair Academy graduate Garrett Frey (125, Princeton) and Lehigh's Mason Beckman (125) dropped their first-round bouts.

More updates to come.
