Liberty to host a boys state semifinal on Weds; Marian, Chester on the same card

FROM KEITH GROLLER

The Lehigh Valley is now totally out of the PIAA state basketball tournament. The NCAA tournament, too, after that tough, second-half shooting performance by Lehigh tonight against Xavier.

But the Lehigh Valley will still be involved in the state tournament as a host.

In a Class 2A semifinal on Wednesday night, Holy Cross, the District 2 runner-up, will play Imhotep Charter, the No. 4 team out of District 12 in a game set for 7 p.m. at Liberty.

Meanwhile, on the same night at Reading's Geigle Complex, the Marian Catholic girls -- the lone District 11 team left in the tournament, will play its Class A semifinal against Steelton-Highspire, the runner-up from District 3.

That's a 6 p.m. game that will serve as the opener of a doubleheader that will include the unbeaten District One champion Chester Clippers taking on Central Dauphin from District 3 in the 4A boys semifinal nightcap.

How do the remaining 32 teams break down by district?

District 7 -- 10 teams.

District 12 -- 8 teams.

District 3 -- 5 teams

District 1 -- 3 teams

District 2 and 10 -- 2 teams apiece.

District 9 and 11 -- 1 team apiece.

And the public school, charter school, parochial breakdown?

14 public schools

13 parochial schools

5 charter schools
