Super Bowl Recap

FROM LAURA NACHMAN

Super Bowl XLVI telecast highlights:

National Anthem Report – Kelly Clarkson performed a competent, but forgettable “National Anthem.” Husband and wife Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton opened with “America the Beautiful.” It was the first sign that NBC would shoe-horn in as many plugs for “The Voice” as possible.

Elton John – Madonna Cat Fight – Madonna wins this round with her halftime performance over Elton’s silly Pepsi commercial. The two have been feuding since Madonna won over Elton John for best song in a movie at “The Golden Globe Awards.”

Movie Trailers – “Safe House” with Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, “The Dictator” with Sasha Baron Cohen, “Battleship,” “John Carter,” “The Lorax,” “Phantom Menace 3-D,” “The Avengers” with Robert Downey Jr. and others, ‘GI Joe,” “Act of Valor”

Halftime Report – 50-something Madonna moved around better than New England tight end Rob Gronkowski while performing oldies “Vogue,” “Music,” and “Like a Prayer,” along with her new song “Give Me All Your Luvin.” Her teammates included the overexposed Cee Lo Green, Nicki Minaj, and LMFAO.

NBC Trailers – Fourth place network NBC promoted “Celebrity Apprentice,” “Rock Center with Brian Williams,” “America’s Got Talent” (with new judge Howard Stern), the Thursday night lineup, “The Tonight Show,” “The Voice,” “Smash” (lots of times), “Awake,” and the Summer Olympics.

Best Commercials – The Ferris Bueller Honda CR-V, The Skydiving Chevy Sonic, Doritos Sling Shot baby, Betty White making her requisite Super Bowl appearance in a promo for The Voice, Clint Eastwood for Chrysler, Charlie Brown and an all-star cast of animated characters for Met Life, the Here We Go dog for Budweiser,

Celebrities – The voice of Vanessa Williams as an M & M, Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno for Acura, Danica Patrick and Jillian Michaels for Go Daddy, Troy Aikman and Deion Sanders for Bridgestone, Tim Duncan and Steve Nash for Bridgestone, David Beckham for his bodywear line available at H & M, Mark Cuban for Sketchers, Regis Philbin for Pepsi, John Stamos for Dannon, Donald Trump, Deion Sanders, and Apollo Anton Ohno for Century 21

Pick a car, any car – practically every automaker was represented including Lexus, Toyota, Honda, Chevy, Ford, Audi, VW, Kia, Hyundai, Acura, and Cadillac.

Lost Endorsement Opportunity – Bill Belichick for Old Navy hoodies
