Super Bowl Rating Sixth Best Ever, While Audience Number Sets Record

Last night’s rating for Super Bowl XLVI featuring the Giants and Patriots on NBC came in at 47.0, up two percent from year’s rating of 46.0 for Packers/Steelers on Fox. The game was the sixth highest rated Super Bowl ever, and the highest rated in 26 years.

The audience for last night’s game averaged 111.3 million viewers, slightly above last year’s 111 million viewers, making Super Bowl XLVI the most watched Super Bowl ever. The audience grew throughout the night and peaked at 117.7 million viewers between 9:3o and 10:00p.m. ET.

Madonna’s halftime show was seen by an audience of 114 million viewers.

“This confirms that the Super Bowl is the most dominant and consistent property on television,” said Mark Lazarus, Chairman, NBC Sports Group in a press release. “We are fortunate, in our new agreement with the NFL, to be able to broadcast three more Super Bowls over the next nine years.”

Locally the game scored a 56.7 rating in Boston (highest amomng local markets) and a 49.7 in New York (18th ranked local market)
