Freedom grad reaches 1,000-point mark

Former Freedom and current Misericordia basketball standout Jeff Slanovec scored his 1,000 career point on a three-point shot from the right wing, propelling the Cougars the their first ever Freedom Conference Championship on Saturday.

Slanovec, a senior guard, went 4-for-6 from the field and 3-for-4 from behind the arc to total 11 points to help the Cougars defeat Wilkes, 65-46. Whitehall's Matt Greene added 10 points and five assists as Misericordia advanced to its first NCAA tournament.

Slanovec has played in 102 games in his career, averaging 9.8 points per game and is ranked second all-time in three-point field goals made with 204.

MU (21-6) will travel to New York University for a game at 7 p.m. Thursday in the NCAA Division III tournament.
