All-area basketball alert and kudos to Cannon on a record-breaking night

FROM KEITH GROLLER

I know a lot of coaches read this blog, so I will put out notice here that I will take your votes on this year's Morning Call All-Area boys basketball team up to and including Monday, March 5. That's after the District 11 tournament is completed, so the entire tournament can be part of your evaluation.

Need your choices for the top 10 players, ranked in order, as well as a coach of the year selection.

Yes, you can vote for your own players and I know that even a few of you have voted for yourself as coach of the year, so that is allowed as well. Please e-mail to kgroller@mcall.com with a phone number attached so we can verify it's you, if need be.

The all-area team will appear in the paper sometime in late March.

Last year's co-player of the week, Allen's Jalen Cannon, continues to have a spectacular freshman year at St. Francis of New York. I was alerted this morning that he had a huge night in a 64-56 win over Quinnipiac at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn.Jalen2

Jalen, who dominanted the boards in the LVC the last few years, collected a Northeast Conference single-game record 19 records and had 13 points in the win over Quinnipiac.

It was Jalen's seventh double-double of the season.

There is plenty of information about Jalen, including an interview after Thursday's game, on the St. Francis website at www.sfcathletics.com.

On a personal note, having covered Jalen's career at Allen, I couldn't be happier for him. It's obvious he has made a great decision in going to St. Francis.
