The Athletic Hall of Fame Committee in the Whitehall-Coplay School District has announced its Athletic Hall of Fame for the Class of 2012. Four individuals will be honored on Jan. 27 at Whitehall High School. The ceremony will be prior to the varsity boys' basketball game between Central Catholic and Whitehall, at approximately 6:45 p.m. The varsity game versus Central Catholic will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m.
The class consists of:
Ed Csencsits, Class of 1965, made his mark as both an athletic and coach. A three sport athlete at Whitehall, Csencsits was a Lehigh Valley League first team offensive end in 1965. Csencsits also participated in basketball and track and field. Csencsits spent 30 years coaching football at Catasauqua High School, with 17 of those as head coach of the Rough Riders. His teams won six Colonial League and four District 11 championships.
Jerry Lloyd, Class of 1998, had a distinguished basketball career at Whitehall. Lloyd was a four-year starter on teams that won three District 11 medals, three East Penn Conference championships, and had three appearances in the PIAA tournament. He attended Mount St. Mary's University and in 1999 was a member of the Northeast Conference Championship team that qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
Valerie J. Nordquist, Class of 1995, made her mark as an outstanding swimmer at both Whitehall High School and Northern Michigan University. While at Whitehall, Nordquist earned four letters, while earning all-state honors in the 100 backstroke. Nordquist still holds WHS records in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. She was also a three-time letterwinner and two-time captain of the track and field team.
Frank Szoke, Class of 1968, was an outstanding high school basketball and baseball player at Whitehall. He was a member of the 1966 District 11 champion baseball team, as well as the 1967 Lehigh Valley League champion basketball team. Szoke played baseball at Rider College. He averaged almost 23 points a game in basketball. He was drafted in the 30th round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the New York Mets as a high school senior.
