Phillipsburg High School wrestlers V.J. DelMonico and Brandon Hull earn silver at King of the Mountain

V.J. DelMonico and Brandon Hull earned silver medals and the Phillipsburg High School wrestling team opened the season with a fifth-place finish at the King of The Mountain wrestling tournament Saturday at Central Mountain High School.

The Stateliners had five place winners in all, including Anthony Pare (third at 285), Jim Schuitema (fifth at 132) and Zach Fisher (sixth at 113).

P'burg finished with 137½ points -- half a point behind fourth-place Greater Latrobe.

Erie McDowell won the team championship with 190 points, Massillon Perry (Ohio) was second (187) and Parkland (159) third.

DelMonico, the No. 7 seed, lost a 17-4 major decision to top-seeded Zack Dailey from Massillon Perry in the 152-pound final, while the second-seeded Hull dropped a wild 10-8 decision to Mifflin County's top-seeded Tyson Searer.

Searer defeated Parkland's Shaun Heist 8-2 in the semifinals.

Heist, who placed third, was one of six place winners for the Trojans.

Pen Argyl finished 16th with four medal winners.

Parkland's Ethan Lizak won the 106-pound title, defeating Perry's David Bavery 5-4 in the finals.

Ian Evans (126) and Nezar Haddad (170) placed fourth, Bryson Berard (160) fifth and Josh Ortman (138) seventh for the Trojans.

Pen Argyl's returning PIAA state champion Mike Racciato settled for third place at 145, bouncing back from a 7-4 loss to Zac Beitz of Juniata in the semifinals with an 8-4 win over Cody Nolan of Erie McDowell.

Kirby Mutton (fifth at 285), Matt Williams (sixth at 120) and Brady Mutton (seventh at 220) were the other Pen Argyl medal winners.

Third-seeded Kirby Mutton lost to eventual champ Nazar Mironenko of Mifflinburg in the semifinals before dropping a 6-2 decision to Pare in the losers' bracket.
