Nazareth Area High School's football team didn't get the right bounces

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

There's no way of telling which way a football is going to bounce.

La Salle College High School fumbled three times, all in critical spots, in Saturday's PIAA Class AAAA quarterfinal football game against Nazareth.

The Explorers recovered two of them, which may have made the difference in their 41-33 victory at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium.

Nazareth got the first break early in the first quarter. La Salle had already scored to take a 7-0 lead and was knocking on the door again after recovering a Nazareth fumble at the Blue Eagles' 19.

La Salle star running back Tim Wade fumbled on the next play. The ball rolled into the end zone and Nazareth defensive end David Wilke recovered for a touchback.

The Blue Eagles weren't as fortunate the next two times. The first potential miscue occurred late in the second quarter when La Salle running back Jared Herrmann fumbled on Nazareth's 4-yard line.

The ball rolled into the end zone. A wild scrum ensued before the Explorers' Chris Kane came up with the ball for a touchdown, giving La Salle a 28-20 lead.

Late in the fourth quarter, La Salle led 41-33 and was attempting to run out the clock after Explorers safety Jimmy Herron intercepted Nazareth QB Dan Harding with 2:30 remaining. La Salle QB Matt Magarity fumbled on second down, giving Nazareth a chance to recover deep in Explorers territory.

Again a wild scrum ensued, and again a La Salle player came up with the ball. To make matters worse for Nazareth, the ball rolled forward a couple yards to set up a third-and inches. Magarity ran for a first down on the next play and La Salle proceeded to run out the clock.

"The defense gave it their all," Wilke said. "There's only so much you can do and so much you can't do."

It's been a season to remember for Nazareth, which captured the Lehigh Valley Conference and District 11 Class AAAA titles. Nevertheless, the team is left wondering what might have happened if the Blue Eagles had fallen on one of those bouncing balls.
