Chris Lum has a school-related trip to Singapore and Hong Kong planned for early January with tight end Mark Wickware, but he may have to change his travel plans.
Lum, Lehigh's record-breaking quarterback, has been named as one of three finalists for the Walter Payton Award, considered the Football Championship Subdivision-level equivalent of the Heisman Trophy.
Lum and the two other finalists, Eastern Washington quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell and Indiana State running back Shakir Bell, have been invited to the FCS awards banquet on Friday, January 6 in Frisco, Texas, where the 25th Payton Award, the most prestigious award in the FCS will be handed out.
The Walter Payton Award is presented by The Sports Network and sponsored by Fathead.com.
The awards will be presented the night before the FCS national championship game set for the following afternoon.
Lum, a senior from Lake Orion, Mich., has been a key to Lehigh's 10-1 season and second consecutive Patriot League title and FCS playoff berth.
He was named the Patriot League's Offensive Player of the Year and has surpassed or challenged every significant Lehigh single-season record.
In 11 games, Lum has completed 67 percent of his passes for 3,739 yards and 31 touchdowns. Hehas set school records for yards and completions (297), established by Glenn Kempa in 1991 and has also tied Kempa’s single-season touchdown mark.
