FROM THE MORNING CALL
LEHIGH COUNTY
ALLENTOWN will help organize a snow shoveling program this winter that partners volunteering teens with seniors who need their sidewalks cleared. They're calling it "Snow Way Out." SERV Allentown Shovels for Seniors, the recently formed organization behind the efforts, is asking seniors who own homes in Allentown to fill out an application found at the city web site at http://www.allentownpa.gov at the Lehigh County Senior Center, 1633 W. Elm St., Allentown. Once a senior qualifies for the program, their application is forwarded to a neighborhood group president. When three or more inches of snow fall, seniors in the program can request a volunteer with a shovel through their neighborhood group location. All volunteers will be wearing an identification card. For young people interested in volunteering, the city will post an application online and collect completed forms at city hall, 435 Hamilton St., Allentown. Youth also will be able to apply for the program to serve as volunteers by visiting the same SERV Allentown Logo link on the city website. Volunteer applicants then go through an approval process which includes a background check. After passing a background check, volunteers will be notified by a neighborhood group president when they are needed. "The program will connect volunteers with qualifying senior citizens who can't do the job themselves," said Mayor Ed Pawlowski. "SERV Allentown, the senior center and our neighborhood groups are collaborating on the effort." The effort grew out of meetings by a 40-member task force earlier this year. The group identified needs in education, community and neighborhood development and youth development in the city.
