TV NEWS ON DECEMBER 31

Welcome to the very last post you'll ever see on Digital Digest (and on this blog) for the year 2011! Of course, today is Saturday, so we're here for Digital Digest just as we are each and every week. But just like last year, we also have our seventh annual Sitcoms on DVD Preview, where we look ahead at what is on the horizon for 2012. But before we get there, we have an abbreviated version of our usual news and preview of Tuesday's releases (abbreviated because there just isn't anything new out there this week). Let's get going!

DIGITAL NEWS

We mentioned a few weeks ago that My Living Doll would be coming to DVD in 2012 from MPI, but now we have a few more details, courtesy of TVShowsOnDVD.com. You can expect the two disc set containing eleven episodes of the series on February 28.

Rules of Engagement has had somewhat of a storied broadcast history, often being placed (temporarily) in bizarre timeslots and being used as a midseason replacement, and it has had a similar history on DVD. But now, Rules of Engagement - The Complete Fifth Season is heading to DVD, only it will be a manufacture-on-demand product. Look for the release on February 21 from amazon.com.

For fans of manufacture-on-demand DVDs, though, there is some more great news from Warner Archive. It appears that the sixth season of Night Court is on the way, but no date is known, yet. We'll have more on this once we know more about it, although given the way Warner Archive releases DVDs, this could be released literally at any time, within a matter of days, weeks, or months. In any event, we can't wait!

UPCOMING WEEK PREVIEW

Tuesday (January 3) only has one release, Universal's Alfred Hitchcock Presents - Season Five. We hope to have a review of this set soon.

CLICK OF THE WEEK

Perfect Strangers Online (perfectstrangers.tv) - We've mentioned this site many times in the past, and it is not pure coincidence. Perfect Strangers Online enjoys an unofficial, but amicable relationship with SitcomsOnline.com, and both sites do some cross-promoting with each other rather often. But we thought we'd go one step further this week and tell you about all of the great content that you can find on this website. While you will certainly find all of the basic information that you need about Perfect Strangers, the website does a great job of going much further in-depth and giving you the information that can only be found with careful and diligent research.

As an example of some of the content that you can find on there, there is a dictionary that gives you some definitions of some of the words from the Mypos language--which of course, as any fan would know, is certainly not a language that can be translated by any other website! You can also find articles, print ads, fan fiction, and much more on the website. Of course, no website would be complete without an episode guide, and this site not only has one, but it has very thorough details for the episodes. Honestly, there is enough content on this site that we could break it into several Click of the Week segments, but instead, you can just go there and explore it on your own--just don't get lost!

That is all for Digital Digest for this week... until next time, keep it digital! But until then, we have our special annual supplement, our seventh annual Sitcoms on DVD Preview!

One of the most popular series in TV history, Leave it to Beaver (1957-1963) stood out from the flock during TV's golden age. While many contemporary shows were star-driven vehicles in which the kids were merely supporting players, Beaver's action centered on the children: seven year Theodore "Beaver" Cleaver and his 12-year-old brother Wally. Though the show went off the air in the '60s, it continues to charm new generations even today. This incredibly valued 2-disc set with great content and a low price will be irresistible to "impulse" shoppers. Featuring 20 favorite and beloved episodes starring Jerry Mathers, Barbara Billingsley, Hugh Beaumont, and Tony Dow. From Shout! Factory. (News)

03/20 - My Living Doll - The Official Collection - Volume One

Iconic actress Julie Newmar may be best-known as the original feline villain Catwoman in the 1960s Batman television series. However, her cult-classic, small-screen career was cemented with the CBS-TV sitcom MY LIVING DOLL.

Newmar portrays Rhoda the robot, a top-secret project of the U.S. government's space program, who is placed under the supervision of agency psychiatrist Dr. Bob McDonald, played by Robert Cummings (The Bob Cummings Show/Love That Bob).

Bob moves the beautiful Rhoda into his apartment and begins the task of training her how to function in the human world while keeping her secret from being discovered, a situation complicated by his interfering sister (Doris Dowling) and his love-sick neighbor Peter (Jack Mullaney).

This collection offers 11 complete episodes of MY LIVING DOLL which have not aired on television in decades and make their official DVD debut. A wealth of special features is also included. From MPI Home Video. (News)

2012 Predictions and Wish List:

These are my 2012 predictions and opinions only. Some of them probably have slim to no chance of ever being available, but I still have them on my wish list. None of these titles have been officially announced.

Some current shows that I expect to see more seasons of or debut on DVD (some are already available for pre-order) include The Big Bang Theory, Community, Cougar Town, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Game, Happy Endings, Hot in Cleveland, How I Met Your Mother, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Last Man Standing, The League, Melissa & Joey, The Middle, Mike & Molly, Modern Family, New Girl, The Office, Parks and Recreation, Raising Hope, Suburgatory, 30 Rock, Two and a Half Men, 2 Broke Girls and Up All Night.

Classic Shows Predictions and Wish List:
According to Jim - Seasons 3-5 were released in 2011. Could we see the final 3 seasons released in 2012?
The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet - A project is ongoing by Sam Nelson to get the show restored and complete on DVD.
Alice - A Christmas episode was released on the Classic TV Christmas Collection in 2010. I think it would be an ideal on demand title from Warner Archive.
Archie Bunker's Place - We could start seeing more seasons now that All in the Family has been completed.
Becker - The series seems to be stalled, with the last release in January 2010.
Blossom - I'm surprised that it hasn't been available as a Shout! Factory Select title like Mr. Belvedere. Seasons 1-2 were released way back in January 2009. Mill Creek released a "best of" set in October 2010.
The Bob Newhart Show - The Complete Fifth and Sixth Seasons are available for pre-order on Amazon.com . Will they finally be released this year?
Brooklyn Bridge - There were rumors of a release in 2010 by the show's creator Gary David Goldberg, but it never materialized.
California Dreams - Only Season 5 remains to be released.
Coach - Season 4 was released in March. Maybe we'll see another season this year.
The Courtship of Eddie's Father - Season 1 was released in September by Warner Archive. Hopefully we'll see the remaining two seasons this year.
Designing Women - Season 5 was released this month. Only Seasons 6-7 are left to be released to complete the series.
Diff'rent Strokes - Shout! Factory picked up the rights to The Facts of Life and released 2 seasons in 2010. I hope they do the same with this show.
8 Simple Rules - We are still waiting for the third and final season.
The Facts of Life - Seasons 4 and 5 were released in 2010. Shout! Factory is releasing many lesser known series, so it has to be a rights issue between them and Sony.
Family Matters - Season 2 is finally coming in February. Hopefully it won't be that long of a wait for more Urkel and company.
Family Ties - Season 5 was released way back in March 2009. This series appears to be stalled, but let's hope CBS DVD/Paramount have some interest in releasing the rest of the series.
Fish - Shout! Factory included the first season in the Barney Miller - The Complete Series release. It would be great to see the second season as well.
George Lopez - It remains a big draw on cable, but only Seasons 1-2 have been released on DVD.
Growing Pains - The second season and two reunion movies were released in 2011. Hopefully Warner Home Video will continue to show us that smile.
Happy Days - Season 5 was released way back in December 2008, but it seems many CBS DVD/Paramount series have been stalled. The new Fan Favorites: The Best of Happy Days release could be a good sign.
Hazel - If Season 2 sells well, maybe we'll see more seasons later this year.
Here's Lucy - Only the sixth season will be left to complete the series after season five is released in February.
The Hogan Family - Music clearance issues seem to be the reason for no DVD releases at this point.
Hope & Faith - Season 1 was released several years ago, but we are still waiting on Seasons 2-3 from Lionsgate.
I'm Dickens...He's Fenster - It seems likely we'll see the second volume of this lost gem sometime in 2012.
It's Your Move - It would make an ideal 3-disc set from Shout! Factory. A cult classic that would be a popular release.
Laverne & Shirley - Another stalled series from CBS DVD/Paramount. Season 4 was released way back in April 2008.
Less Than Perfect - Season 1 was released in September 2010. Hopefully this underrated series will have more seasons available in 2012.
The Lucy Show - Only the sixth season is left to complete the series.
Mad About You - Seasons 6-7 are still needed to complete the series.
Mama's Family - A Christmas episode was released on the Classic TV Christmas Collection in 2010. Season 2 would be nice to see through Warner Archive.
Mr. Belvedere - We're just waiting on Seasons 5-6 to complete the series.
Mister Ed - Season 5 was released as a Shout! Select title in 2011. Only Season 6 remains to complete the series.
Mork & Mindy - Mork calling CBS DVD... come in CBS DVD... We only need the fourth season to complete the series.
My Three Sons - Only Seasons 1-2 have been released. Unfortunately, many CBS DVD/Paramount series have been stalled for years.
My Two Dads - Only the third season remains to be released to complete the series.
My Wife and Kids - Only Seasons 1-2 have been released.
Night Court - Season 6 is in the works. We'll only need Seasons 7-9 after that to complete the series.
Out of This World - Volume 1 was released in Germany in November. Will we see a U.S. release at some point?
Parker Lewis Can't Lose - Seasons 1 and 2 have been released. We're just waiting on the third season to complete the series.
Perfect Strangers - Warner Bros. has a "best of" collection available on the On Demand service at Amazon.com . This could be a good sign that we'll eventually see the second season on DVD or maybe as part of WBShop's on demand store. We desperately need more Balki!
The Phil Silvers Show/Sgt. Bilko - We're still waiting on the second season.
Please Don't Eat the Daisies - I remember watching this series and The Coursthip of Eddie's Father on WWOR. It would be a nice release for Warner Archive.
Rhoda - It's frustrating to be missing only one season for a number of series.
Silver Spoons - It would make a great Shout! Factory Select title.
Small Wonder - Seasons 1-2 have been released. Seasons 3-4 are still needed to complete the series.
Welcome Back, Kotter - An episode was released on the Classic TV Christmas Collection in 2010. The remaining seasons would be fantastic to see.
Webster - Seasons 1-4 were released at a brisk pace. Only Seasons 5-6 are left to complete the series.
The Wonder Years - The first season had only six episodes. It could be given a trial run. Music licensing rights are a major issue, but hopefully a company like Shout! Factory could work on this set. It has been the #1 most requested unreleased show at TVShowsonDVD.com by a wide margin for many years. While we wait for the DVD, you can watch it on The Hub, Netflix and Amazon.com .

FINAL MESSAGE FROM ROSS NUNAMAKER

FROM ROSS NUNAMAKER

The last day of 2011 and my 3,249th and final post on NOC (as first announced at Thanksgiving). Since the first post tracked by Google Analytics there have been 460,000 visits by nearly 98,000 unique visitors and 725,000 pageviews. Wow, and these numbers are less than actual readership since I fragmented traffic in 2010 by posting to Twitter, Facebook, and Posterous.

Regardless, I'm so pleased that so many people have found the site to be a source of local news and information. I had wanted to have a variety of contributors, but in reality only a handful ever offered to publicly post on the site: Brad Moulton, Jacob Allen, and Chris Moren. My thanks to each of them. Chris provided coverage and started his own blog that I often referenced about Tatamy. Brad and Jacob contributed posts regarding the NASD. I also had reports emailed by Becky Butz regarding Nazareth Borough Council. I have to thank them all.

There have been many groups and organizations that sent me material to share about their events and needs and many thanks to them. Some were students and their families, others were our Library, Fire Department, and other well known groups that we probably take for granted more often than not. To them I have to say thank you for your service to our community!

So many individuals who asked to go unnamed have sent me tips, questions, links, suggestions, and I tried very hard to make a post when possible and to respect the request of the individual to remain unknown and/or anonymous. Many of these I maintain regular email correspondence and that has been a great benefit of having the site.

For me this has been a great way to pull together my interest in my community, its history, digital media, and writing, while keeping abreast of new technology/services being made available and using them.

At the end of the day, this has been a great experience. I've seen that people contribute in a variety of ways. While there may not be a lot of people attending the various meetings, there are some, just as there are some volunteering at their church, civic organization, commission, service organization, scout and brownie troops, youth sports leagues, and cause based organizations. I've seen first hand that people do care about many issues regarding their local community. I've also seen local governments being more responsive and in some cases proactive as a result of online reporting, not only from this site, but from the many others operating in the Lehigh Valley, particularly Lehigh Valley Ramblings and Lehigh Valley Live (the Express-Times online). I expect this to continue, expand, and evolve.

Residents now have Facebook to connect with one another, ask questions, and share links. FB itself creates Lists (there is one for Nazareth) that pulls people's updates who self-identify as being from Nazareth. While I'm not a fan of the site for a variety of reasons, I'm on it and will probably continue to check-in at least until enough friends move to G+. Having said that who knows what platform will be presented in the next five years, certainly there is a game changer given location based services and the shift to handheld devices.

Looking back at our community since August of 2005 there were many big issues (Teachers Strike, New Nazareth Borough Building, Skate Park, New NASD Middle School were probably the biggest, while ongoing ones included my favorite pedestrian safety, drugs, and vandalism), but there were also many instances of reporting on good things and I always enjoyed reporting on the things that make Nazareth special, our people, heritage, traditions, and events.

I was also very pleased to hold a "Resident to Candidate" night, which was a non-partisan 'how to become a local candidate' session and a pair of "Meet the Candidates" nights back in 2007 when several local issues had many residents upset and complaining, well if you want it done right, here's how to do it yourself;-) They were very successful and the Express-Times covered the event. I had told Editor Joe Owens I wanted to have 20 people, he replied that 20 would be a smashing success. We had 40 not including the presenters and media.

If I told someone in Iowa (popular place right now) that we have an adult soap box derby race each year and Mario Andretti hung out with the locals waiving the checkered flag for an afternoon, I'd be willing to bet they wouldn't believe me. If I told them we have a Kazoo Parade on the 4th of July, I'm sure they'd write me off as telling tales.

Having Martin Guitar in town is special and I'd personally love to see our downtown honor our musical heritage (Moravian Heritage, its historic instruments, and our Community Band) and draw tourists who visit the plant daily in. It is a huge opportunity for us and given the success of Martin on Main it seems with effort this could happen. The foundation is in place, we now need a framework.

Each year our town is home to several parades and great respect is given to our servicemen and women both current and former, from the Memorial Garden at Shafer Elementary to the Parades and Ceremony in Town on Memorial and Veteran's day, not to mention the Quarters for Military Family drives. We saw the re-Dedication of the Canon in the Circle to honor the 100th anniversary of its placement as a Civil War Memorial.

The Halloween Parade has been expanded and is something our family and friends enjoy going to each year. Soundfest draws hundreds to Andrew S. Leh Stadium each fall featuring a band competition held by the NASD Blue Eagle Marching Band.

This year saw the return of the Farmers' Market after a five year absence (I had reported on it ending and happily its revival) and it seemed to be quite a success. Most Saturdays in addition to the fresh local food there was live music from local performers. Unfortunately Evening on Main Street ended, but the Holiday Season now has many activities including the Tree Lighting Ceremony, Nazareth to Bethlehem Peace Walk, Walking Tour, Holiday House Tour, Christmas at the Henry Homestead and many more.

For several years Nazareth was host to the Miss PA Pageant, but unfortunately it was relocated to Western PA.

Summer wouldn't be complete without Nazareth Days, the Sidewalk Sales, the Nazareth Carnival, and the Holy Family Festival.

Back in 2006 the Borough Park Pool turned 70 and I tried to feature the other 'community' parks spread throughout Nazareth, which again is something special we have and hope the Borough continues to maintain and support (here I wrote about Kiwanis Park).

I'm sure I missed more than I included here, but I really wanted to focus on all the positives we have in Nazareth. It is so easy to dwell on negatives, complain, and criticize, but much harder to build on positives, offer alternatives and options, and work toward building coalitions to get things done in the right way. Having said that, I've seen first hand that there are many more people doing the latter in a quiet way here in Nazareth than there are the former. If we each continue to keep one another informed and contribute in the ways that work best for each, then we will be able to continue to build a better community.

The goal from day one was simple, "Life keeps getting busier. NewsOverCoffee is the place where neighbors connect to share news and information about Nazareth, PA. In short, it is where Colonial Hospitality meets information technology to ensure an even better community."

I know this will continue only in a different way than via NOC. Thanks again to everyone this has been a truly unique experience that has taught me so much.

I hope everyone has a wonderful New Year!

Groller's Corner Top 11 stories of 2011: Part II, No. 7 to No. 4

FROM KEITH GROLLER

We continue with the Groller's Corner review of the top events/stories/happenings of 2011.

On Friday we gave the first four on our list.

No. 11 -- Freedom grad Johnny Lahutsky being honored by the New York Yankees during "Hope Week"

No. 10 -- Allen boys basketball team sings Happy Birthday after winning District 11 4A title.

No. 9 -- Was "treated" to four laps by Clint Bowyer at Pocono Raceway and then raced to Philly to see Brian Schneider welcome Carpenter Cup champs to Citizens Bank Park.

No. 8 -- Basketball great Bill Walton delivers memorable speech at Thanksgiving eve event in Fogelsville.

Today, we give you four more of the most memorable things that happened on Groller's Corner in 2011 -- going from No.7 to No. 4, and we'll wrap it up with three more -- the top three -- on Sunday.

No. 7 --- Catty's Anthony Recker arrives in the big leagues at Yankee Stadium on same day as earthquake shook East Coast.

It's always exciting when a local product makes it to the pros whether it's an Andre Reed or Nate Hobgood-Chittick making it to the NFL, Aaron Gray making it to the NBA or Brian Schneider making it to the big leagues. So, it was exciting when Catasauqua High grad Anthony Recker got called up by the Oakland A's on Aug. 23 and was set to join the club at Yankee Stadium -- the closest AL venue to Catty and the same place where Catty's previous big leaguer, Pat Kelly, called home for several seasons.
Recker will likely always remember his first day and first week in the big leagues. That's because on the day he reported to New York, we had that brief earthquake that shook up everybody from Virginia to Maine.

Then two days later, Recker made his MLB debut in a historic game. He was the catcher for all nine, long innings when the Yankees hit a record three grand slams in a 22-9 victory after Oakland led 7-1 after three innings.

And then a couple of days after that in Boston, Recker collected his first big-league hit against the Red Sox as Hurricane Irene pounded the entire East Coast and was just arriving in Massachusetts in the form of rain when Recker got his first hit off Erik Bedard.

No. 6 -- Andre Reed attracts all kinds of former NFL stars to the Lehigh Valley.

For the second straight year, former Dieruff, Kutztown and Bills star Andre Reed brought all kinds of sports celebrities to the Lehigh Valley to play in his charity golf tournament in July. And this year there was a definite Bills flavor with Thurman Thomas, Bruce Smith and Cornelius Bennett among the players on hand. I talked to most of them and Greg Lloyd and Terrell Davis, too, and all had great things to say about Andre. So did Eagles great Mike Quick. I had a sit down interview with Quick, talking about his Eagles broadcast career, which was a lot of fun. Just listening him to re-live "Miracle at the Meadowlands, Part II" made the interview memorable for me.

Reed (seen above with his sister Teshia) is planning even bigger and better things for 2012, but one thing will likely change. The 2010 and 2011 golf tourneys were to benefit The Second Mile and I imagine -- for obvious reasons -- a different charity will be the beneficiary this summer.

No. 5 -- Having Tommy John on the "Calling All Sports" radio show.

About a week after the Reed event, there was another celebrity golf tournament in the Valley. This one was to benefit the BEST College Scholarship fund and the pre-tournament party was held at the Sands Casino and Resort in Bethlehem. Billy Staples is the man who made it happen and he brought in dozens of celebs, mostly former pro athletes, to benefit BEST. I tried my best to promote the event and as part of that PR push Staples arranged to have Tommy John guest -- by phone -- on The Morning Call "Calling All Sports" radio show. It was supposed to be a brief 15-minute interview, but it turned into close to an hour because John kept telling one great story after another.

When the event arrived, I met some of the former big league players at the Sands and did a story on Jack Fisher and Tracy Stallard, the pitchers who gave up home runs No. 60 and No. 61 respectively to Roger Maris. Both are great friends and Stallard really made an impression on me as being a real good guy.

I never did get to see John, but his appearance on my radio show ranks as my favorite radio moment of the year and several e-mailers told me how much they enjoyed listening to him.

No. 4 -- Lehigh football playoff run takes me to Fargo.

Thanks to having the Lehigh football beat, I have gotten to see a good portion of this country, especially the East Coast. I've been to places from Virginia to New Hampshire for regular season games and to Greenville, S.C., Cedar Falls, Iowa and Fargo, North Dakota for playoff games. In my Morning Call career, I've taken just seven flights in 30 years and four were to Lehigh games.

Fargo was the destination this year after Lehigh repeated as Patriot League champs and then beat Towson 40-38 in their first playoff game. It was a quick 38-hour trip to Fargo and back for me.

Lehigh was shut down by North Dakota State, 24-0, but the atmosphere inside the Fargo Dome was something I will never forget. It was the best atmosphere for a game at this level. North Dakota State is Fargo'spro team and they are deeply passionate about their Bison.

I thought this was a cool place and the people of Fargo, at least the few I met at the hotel, mall and dome, were special people.

But this Lehigh football team was special, too, setting a variety of offensive records in an 11-2 campaign. Quarterback Chris Lum and wide receiver Ryan Spadola may go down as the most prolific passing combo in school history. We'll never know if the game at North Dakota State might have gone differently had not Spadola been suspended for re-tweeting an ill-advised comment that included a variation of the "N" word.

As for Fargo, I hardly got to know you. But from what I've seen you're a very nice place and one day I'd like to return and spend a little more time.

I will never forget the pregame show or the meat loaf served to the press corps. The whole feel was big-time.

Can Lehigh three-peat and maybe get yours truly another trip to a faraway destination in 2012? We'll find out in the fall.

Police say 24-year-old Nazareth man robbed elderly women for drug money

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

Nazareth police say they've arrested a borough man in connection with the snatching of a 94-year-old woman's purse last week after he was caught robbing another elderly woman earlier today.

Police say Caleb Clift, 24, was apprehended and taken into custody today after he was caught robbing a 90-year-old woman of her purse in front of the Lafayette Ambassador Bank in the 100 block of South Main Street.

Clift robbed the woman while he was on his way to meet a heroin dealer and needed money to pay for it, police said.

In addition to admitting to the charges, police say Clift also admitted to snatching a 94-year-old woman's purse last Saturday at the Moravian Hall Square retirement community.

Feeding his heroin addiction was the motive behind the two incidents, police said.

According to arresting officer Daniel Troxell, Clift had been living in the American Hotel in the 200 block of South Main Street in the borough. Police said that hotel representatives were very cooperative with the investigation.

Troxell said that Clift told him that he had developed a heroin addiction because of a growing presence of drug activity in Nazareth and that it was "hard to get away from it."

Clift is being charged separately for the two incidents and faces multiple counts of robbery, receiving stolen property, possession of drug paraphernalia and theft.

Berks Story of the Year: Reading CC goes out with a bang

FROM CHANNEL 69

2011 is coming to an end and we had a lot of great moments thanks to the local Berks County athletes.

But there is one story that sticks out a little more than the rest - the magical and improbable run of the Reading Central Catholic baseball team.

In February the Allentown Archdioceses announced Reading Central Catholic would be closing its doors and merging with Holy Name in the fall of 2011.

All central Catholic teams would be playing their final season as Cardinals.

In May, the baseball team entered the District III Class A tournament as the 10tg seed with just four wins to its name.

They promptly rattled off seven straight wins, taking home their first and only district baseball title and advancing all the way to the state title game.
They lost the PIAA Class A title game to Serra Catholic, but their run in the district and state tournament kept Central Catholic's traditions alive even after the school had shut its doors.
The Cardinals' historic run tops our list as the top story of 2011

LV Story of the Year: Sandberg leads IronPigs to new heights

FROM CHANNEL 69

From a Lehigh Valley sports standpoint, the year 2011 was pretty entertaining. There were several state champions at the high school level and record-breaking offenses in both high school and college football.

But ultimately, one story stood above the rest from the year 2011.

Our 69 Sports Lehigh Valley story of the ear comes from Coca-Cola Park.

Ryne Sandberg, the Hall of Famer, took over as IronPigs manager this year, and took the 'Pigs to unprecedented heights.

Sandberg took a team that had never even been above the .500 mark, and led them to their first ever playoff appearance, then all the way to the International League Finals.

Sandberg was then named Minor League Baseball's Manager of the Year for his efforts.

Meanwhile, the IronPigs also topped all of Minor League Baseball in attendance this year, making Coca-Cola Park the most visited Minor League venue in the entire country.

Both on and off the field, the IronPigs' smashing success checks in as our 2011 Lehigh Valley sports story of the year.

6ABC’s Cathy Gandolfo Announces Retirement

FROM LAURA NACHMAN

FROM 6 ABC:

After more than 36 years of covering news from South Philadelphia to South Jersey and around the globe, Cathy Gandolfo is retiring.

Cathy began as a news writer and part time reporter at Action News back in 1975.

A proud graduate of Goretti High School for Girls in South Philadelphia and Temple University in North Philadelphia, Cathy wasted no time becoming a familiar face on millions of TV screens around the region.

She weathered many a nor'easter at the Jersey Shore and dozens of snowstorms including the crippling Blizzard of '96.

She reported on many of New Jersey's biggest criminal cases.

Cathy covered several political conventions for both Democrats and Republicans.

She was there in 1985 as President Ronald Reagan made his historic trip to what was then West Germany and she toured a concentration camp with Frank Lautenberg.

Cathy made many trips to the Vatican to cover the life and death of Pope John Paul II and the making of cardinals and saints.

But Cathy had lots of fun along the way and delivered more than a few lighthearted moments to viewers across the Delaware and Lehigh valleys.

Cathy has won many awards for her work. In 2008, she was inducted into the prestigious Philadelphia Broadcast Pioneers Hall of Fame.

Cathy has certainly left her mark on TV news.

She has earned her retirement and we wish her well.

In her own words: Cathy's message to the viewers

As we all prepare to usher in the New Year, I will also be ushering in the next chapter of my life - retirement after 36 years with Channel 6 Action News. As many of you probably know, I was born and raised in South Philadelphia, went to St. Maria Goretti High School and Temple University, so spending my entire career in my hometown has been a rewarding experience for me on so many levels.

I've been privileged to cover some incredible events and, more often, just ordinary stories of importance to our viewers.

I have always tried to be objective, fair, and accurate and I hope that I've served you well.

I've been honored to work at the best television station in America with the finest group of professionals anywhere; people who are not only my colleagues and coworkers, but my friends.

So I thank you for watching Action News and for watching me all of these years.

I wish you a very happy 2012.

Now for one, final time: I'm Cathy Gandolfo, Channel 6 Action News.

Top Sports Media News Items of 2011

It’s tradition that news organizations look at the top stories of the year as December winds down. Why should we be any different? Here are what we consider the top sports media news stories for 2011:

Despite Lockout, NFL Thrives: The National Football League spent the first half of 2011 mired in a labor dispute which resulted in the owners locking out the players. The impassed ended in July and the 2011 season was salvaged. The work stoppage did nothing to quell the support for the NFL. NFL games continue to be some of the highest rated programs each week, and the league re-newed television broadcast agreements with ESPN, NBC, CBS, and Fox which will bring in nearly $5 billion annual until 2022. The only television deal yet to be finalized is one which may extend a Thursday night match-up each week of the season.

NBC Retains Rights to the Olympics Through 2020: NBC will continue its run as the U.S. network of the Olympic Games after having secured the broadcast rights to the Summer and Winter Games through 2020. NBC, ESPN, and Fox all put in bids to telecast the games, but the International Olympic Committee decided that its relationship with NBC, along with its $4.38 billion dollar bid, was worthy of the retention.

ESPN Loses the Rights to the World Cup to Fox: Despite losing the Olympics to NBC, it was widely assumed that ESPN would be able to retain its U.S. broadcast rights to the World Cup. But when the rights to the men’s and women’s torunaments came up for bid this summer, ESPN was outbid by Fox, which will pay $400 for all evets beginning in 2015. Telemundo was awarded the Spanish-language rights, at a cost of $600 million. ESPN still has the rights to the men’s World Cup in 2014.

Changes at the Top of Network Sports Divisions: Some big news was made off-the-air as NBC and ESPN announced changes at the top of their sports organizational structures. Long time NBC Sports Chairman Dick Ebersol resigned in May after 22 years at the helm. He has been replaced by NBC Sports Group President Mark Lazarus. Late last month it was announced that ESPN President George Bodenheimer was being promoted to ESPN Executive Chairman while Vice President of Content John Skipper will be promoted to President of ESPN. That moves take place January 1st.

NBC Sports Extends its Reach in Competition with ESPN: After its merger with Comcast was complete, NBC Sports began making moves toward compteting with ESPN. Along with its deals with the NFL and the Olympics, NBC extended its deal to air the NHL on its networks. It also announced in August that Versus will be re-branded as the NBC Sports Network effective January 2nd.

Sports Networks Handle Sexual Abuse Scandals at Penn State and Syracuse: When accusations of sexual abuse of minors arose against former Penn State Defensive Coordinator Jerry Sandusky and former Syracuse Assistant Basketball Coach Bernie Fine, sports media outlets became news journalists. Sports networks break news all the time, but it seemed that it was uncomfortable at times for these outlets to tackle these sensitive issues. ESPN was also called to task for not reporting what it knew about Fine back in 2002. These stories will definitley evolve in 2012.

ESPN Continues Its Dominance In Coverage of the NCAA: 2011 was another seminal year for ESPN in terms of its coverage of college athletics. In August the network launched the Longhorn Network, the first network devoted to the sports of one educational institution. Later in the fall ESPN also renewed its deal to televise 24 NCAA Championships through 2024. Event though Fox Sports has made inroads in securing rights deals, especially with the Pac 12, ESPN remains the dominant force in telecasting college atheltics.

The Latest Book on the History of ESPN is Released Amid Much Talk: It was the most anticipated sports book release of the year, Those Guys Have All the Fun: Inside the World of ESPN by James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales. Excerpts of the book leaked out up until its release in May, giving readers a look at some of the seedier moments behind-the-scenes in the history of the network. In the end some were disappointed that there was not more sleeze, while those interested in television history in general, and ESPN in particular, found much to like in the book. You can hear our two interviews with co-author Miller on the Sports Media Weekly Podcast here and here.

Those are what we feel were to top sports media stories of 2011. There were plenty of others, including the controversies at ESPN over the firing of Ron Franklin and the “suspension” of Bruce Feldman, Gus Johnson leaving CBS for Fox, The launch of Bill Simmons’ Grantland, Bob Costas and Al Michaels sharing the mic for a Major League Baseball game, and the NCAA tournament games being shared by CBS and Turner Sports.

Needless to say the sports media beat is now a 24/7 endeaver and we’ll continue to do our best, within our resources, to bring you what’s making news within the industry. Please let me know what you think of SMJ and how we can improve. Thank you for your continued support and we wish you all the best for 2012!

Groller's Corner Top 11 stories/events of 2011 -- Part I from No.11 to No. 8

FROM KEITH GROLLER

Everybody's doing year-in-review lists and stories this week.

Why not Groller's Corner?

It has been an eventful year here on Groller's Corner with lots of special moments and events taking place.

I know lots of folks are still complaining about the new charges for viewing online content. I feel bad about that, but nothing I can do except thank the people who continue to read mcall.com, especially Groller's Corner. We appreciate your support and strive to keep this blog as entertaining and informative as possible.

It was a fun year on a number of levels. And sometimes you don't fully realize all you've done and where you've been until you stop, and take time to look back.

Today, Saturday and Sunday we'll look back at some of things I will never forget about this year, starting with our favorite stories from No.11 to No. 8.

No. 11 -- Johnny Lahutsky's big day with the Yankees in New York City (see photo above).

Johnny is a Freedom High graduate who was born prematurely in Russia at six months and whose cerebal palsy led to him being abandoned and left to suffer in a brutal Russian orphanage. His story is well-documented in his book called "The Boy From the Baby House." Dateline NBC told his story of survival and coming to this country thanks to the kindness of a wonderful Bethlehem woman named Paula Lahutsky. LV Yankee Fan Club president Chuck Frantz met John, learned he was a Yankees fan and submitted the story to the New York Yankees who agreed it was a heart-warmng story of inspriation and made it one of their Hope Week stories.
On July 29, the Yankees arranged a surprise reunion for Johnny with his best friend, Andrei from the orphanage and treated the two like kings with an appearance on the Today show, a carriage ride with manager Joe Girardi from Rockefeller Center to the Central Park Zoo and then all kinds of festivities and interaction with Yankee players and coaches such as Mark Teixeira and Brett Gardner, plus ceremonies at Yankee Stadium before a game against the Orioles. The Yankees proved to be a class organization with all of the kindness and consideration they showed to John and Andrei that day. No one deserved it more than Johnny, who is a special, special person.

No. 10 -- Allen HIgh basketball team sings "Happy Birthday" to me after winning district title.

My 50th birthday on March 5 bothered me more than I thought it would. Rather than embrace it as a special milestone, I didn't even want to think about it. I told everyone I wanted no surprise parties, no cake, nothing. I still got one from family. On the actual birthday, I wanted to stay busy and not sit around and think about where all of the years have gone.

So, I did what I would normally do and that's cover District 11 basketball at Parkland. The 4A championship game was that night and in a thriller, Allen beat Liberty. We had three Division I players on the court on the same time -- Liberty's Darrun Hllliard and Allen's Daquan Holiday and Jalen Cannon. It was a hard-fought battle.

When it was over, Doug Snyder knew it was my birthday and before his players left the court that night, he made sure the players -- gold medals draped around their necks -- all serenaded me with "Happy Birthday." It was a very nice gesture for the Allen kids to take time from what was one of the happiest moments of their lives to do that.

As happy as I was for the Allen kids that night, I was just as sad for them about 11 days later when the Canaries surrendered a big lead and had an unbelievably horrible, offensive "intentional" foul call go against them in a PIAA second-round playoff loss to La Salle College.

No. 9 -- From Pocono to Philly, July 27 was a whirlwind day.

Some days stand out more than others and July 27 was a day I'll never forget because it extended from Pocono to Philly.

It began with four very fast laps around the track at Pocono Raceway with NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Clint Bowyer. I remember the feeling of claustrophobia as I squeezed into the car and got strapped in tight with a very little wiggle room.

But all thoughts of claustrophobia left as Bowyer began taking me around the "Tricky Triangle" at speeds of 130 and 140 miles an hour. I think he was supposed to give me just three laps, but much to my chagrin, I got a bonus fourth lap. It was scary and exciting at the same time, and frankly, I was happy when it was over.

From there it was an equally fast and dangerous ride down the turnpike and Schuylkill Expressway to Citizens Bank Park where I got to see the Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup team on the field being honored by Brian Schneider and the Phillies. The kids really enjoyed that experience of being on the field as the Phillies took batting practice. Classy move by former Carpenter Cup player Schneier to make it all happen.

No. 8 -- Getting to hear and meet one of my all-time favorite basketball players, Bill Walton.

I don't necessarily like to meet people in person that I've always admired. There's a great fear that they will somehow disappoint you and all of those years of admiration will get tossed out the window in a moment of rudeness. So I was a little leery of meeting Bill Walton and covering his appearance in Fogelsville at a special Thanksgiving Eve banquet sponsored by the Lehigh Valley Chapter of Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants and LifePath.

Walton was one of my favorite players when he was at UCLA in the early to mid-1970s and leading the Bruins to national titles, so I was worried about him being a complete jerk (my meeting with Mike Schmidt comes to mind) and disappointing me.

He didn't. He delivered an entertaining, informative and often compelling 55-minute speech and was just as kind and considerate in interacting with people, including me, after it was over
