Somebody Do Something: Class-less building in Stockertown

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

First, it was a four-room elementary school. Then, it was the practice site for the Singing Boys of Pennsylvania. Now, it's an eyesore and a potential danger to young children, according to a reader.

The former Lincoln School is at the corner of Center Street and Lincoln Avenue in Stockertown.

In 2001, borough council sold the property for $77,000 and approved plans for conversion to a four-unit apartment complex.

Since then, remodeling began but has never been completed.

One reader describes the site as an "eyesore" and a possible danger to young children, especially because the borough playground is behind the school.

"Holes were dug several years ago at the front of the building, to extend the building, but, nothing has been done since that time. There it sits - not completed," the reader writes. "Is the owner going to wait until a child gets hurt after falling into those holes?"

Are you familiar with this property? Would you allow your child to play in the nearby playground? Should borough council or anyone else intervene to resolve the problem? Tell us what you think by posting a comment below.
