Saturday night’s battle between #1 LSU and #2 Alabama registered a rating for CBS of 11.5 with an average of 20 million viewers, making the game the most watched regular season college football match-up on the network in 22 years.
Ratings for the game were 161% higher than the match-up between these same two teams in 2010. To be fair, Alabama entered the 2010 game ranked 5th while LSU was ranked 12th. That game was also played on a Saturday afternoon.
The highest rated regular season college football game on CBS prior to Saturday was the 1989 match-up between Notre Dame and Miami which saw an audience of 22 million viewers.
