Lehigh posts a 14-7 win over Holy Cross to improve to 8-1

FROM KEITH GROLLER

After many offensive showcases this season, Lehigh used a staunch defensive effort and a pair of Matt Fitz touchdown runs to post a hard-fought win over Holy Cross, 14-7, on Saturday before more than 9,000 fans at Goodman Stadium.

Lehigh improves to 9-1 overall, 3-0 in the Patriot League, with Georgetown coming to Goodman Stadium next week with the Patriot League title and automatic berth to the NCAA tournament on the line.

This was Lehigh's lowest scoring output of the season.

The Mountain Hawks were held well below all of their season averages.

But it doesn't matter because the defense pitched a shutout after Holy Cross took a 7-9 lead on a Ryan Taggart TD pass with 10:54 left in the second quarter.

This was easily Lehigh's most physically demanding, toughest test of the season.

Two missed field goal attempts made it even harder.

Chris Lum threw two interceptions and 251 yards passing. For the first time all season, he did not have a TD pass. Ryan Spadola was also held down, catching just four passes for 58 yards.

Zach Barket ran for 102 yards and had four receptions for 50 yards.

Taggart had the TD, but was just 14-for-33 for 160 yards and he was limited to 18 yards rushing.
