Penn State University President Graham Spanier and head football coach Joe Paterno were ousted today by the school's board of trustees, officials announced tonight during a 10'clock news conference.

Tom Bradley has been named interim coach and will coach Saturday's game against Nebraska. It would have been Paterno's last home game, officials said.

As reported on lehighvalleylive.com this afternoon, Spanier was told he could either resign his post or be voted out by trustees, according to a source close to the board.

The university's Executive Vice President and Provost Rodney A. Erikson will serve as interim president during a nationwide search for his replacement, officials said.

Spanier and Paterno's ousters comes in the wake of child molestation charges filed Saturday against former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, who retired in 1999. He faces 40 counts stemming from the alleged sexual assaults of eight boys over 15 years, including at least one alleged incident on campus in 2002.

A graduate assistant witnessed the 2002 incident, reported it to Paterno, who in turn told university Athletic Director Tim Curley and Senior Vice President for Finance and Business Gary Schultz, whose role at the university included oversight of its police department.

Curley and Schultz are each charged with failure to report and perjury; Curley is on indefinite leave from the university and Schultz retired. Paterno, who is not charged in the case, announced today his intention that he will retire a the close of this season.
