Allen, Dieruff to decide its football future in the next few days

FROM KEITH GROLLER

Allen and Dieruff will be announcing details about its football future within the next few days.

Sources have confirmed that the Lehigh Valley Conference has given the two schools permission to leave the LVC in football only.

Now, it's up to the two schools to decide what they are going to do.

There has been some discussion about the Canaries and Huskies joining the seven-team Mountain Valley Conference. Some officials within the MVC have expressed interest in this because it is difficult to put together a schedule with just seven teams as the league is presently constituted.

Right now, each MVC member plays just six league games and has four independent slots to fill. Allen and Dieruff coming aboard will give each member eight league games and just two independents.

Allen and Dieruff would seem to be more competitive in the MVC than in the LVC.

ASD officials said back in September that they would be exploring other options after the 2011 season, acknowledging that the Canaries and Huskies were no longer competitive in the LVC.

The 2011 season marked that the third consecutive season and fifth time in six years that Allen and Dieruff were a combined 1-19 with the one win coming in their game against each other at the end of the season.

The last time either team won a LVC game against someone other than themselves was Sept. 30, 2005 when Allen beat Nazareth 28-6.

Dieruff's last win over a LVC opponent other than Allen came on Oct.30, 2004 when the Huskies beat Central Catholic 34-7.

Dieruff has played MVC member Pocono Mountain East as its season opener for several years, but has lost three straight after beating East 49-7 in 2008.
