Nazareth Chamber encourages community service

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

By Tina Smith

The Nazareth Area Chamber of Commerce is involved in many community events that require many volunteers to make them successful. To name a few, there is the just recently concluded Martin on Main, the Nazareth Kazoo Parade, Loaves & Fishes soup kitchen, The Relay for Life, and the list goes on and on. We also have some new events we are planning, but all of these events take people power.

Through the years we have had many member businesses that have volunteered to help, but as business and the economy gets more difficult, a business owner's main priority must be to run their business.

The need for volunteers for community service is not just a chamber issue but it is a general community issue. I recently saw a request in The Express-Times by an individual that maintained the memorial rose garden near Shafer elementary school. He was looking for people to carry on his work.

Many of our senior citizens have worked hard to support their community, but as they age and pass on we are in desperate need of a new generation to take their place. Our school district no longer requires community service hours to be a part of the graduation requirements, but I am sure that many youth organizations within and outside of the school district still require it and encourage it.

The Nazareth Area Chamber is asking any group, organization, or individual, young or old, that either needs or desires to do community service, to contact us. We will compile a list of those who would like to help and we will disseminate the information to community organizations that need the help. I should clarify that this is not just for Nazareth but is for the general readership area.

If you live in Bath or Easton or anywhere else and want to help in your area, we will pass the information on to those in need.

I thank you in advance for your interest and hope we will all work together to make our community the best that it can be.
