FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES
Do you want to know what love is?
Love is the sound of thousands of screaming fans singing in unison at the Allentown Fairgrounds.
Classic rock bands Journey, Foreigner and Night Ranger took the stage tonight at the Great Allentown Fair, bringing with them a karaoke-worthy collection of hits and sing-a-longs.
Sure, the music sounded a bit dated; stuck somewhere in a time warp between Spinal Tap and Skid Row (even the computer-generated "band' on screen behind Foreigner had mullets). But that didn't stop them, or the crowd, from having a good time.
Night Ranger worked the crowd early on, hitting them hard and fast with an array of radio hits, including "Sister Christian'" and a spin through Damn Yankees' "High Enough."
Foreigner followed, though the band's only remaining original member, guitarist Mick Jones, was not in attendance. He was replaced by guitarist Joel Hoekstra, who split his time playing lead with Night Ranger and Foreigner.
Singer Kelly Hansen held his own and demonstrated impressive range, belting out Foreigner staples such as "Double Vision," "Cold as Ice," "Waiting for a Girl Like You,' "Urgent" and "Feels Like the First Time,' while whipping the crowd into a frenzy.
Halfway through the lighter/cell phone-friendly ballad "I Want to Know What Love Is," students from William Allen High School appeared on stage to sing the chorus.
"Makes you want to go back to high school and join the choir, huh?" Hansen joked.
On "Urgent," multi-instrumentalist Thom Gimbel busted out a saxophone solo which literally brought him to his knees and the audience to its feet.
Hoekstra continued to give his fingers a workout, melting his fretboard on a searing -- though by-the-numbers -- rendition of 1978's "Hot Blooded."
The group exited the stage, returning seconds later for the band's 1981 hit, "Jukebox Hero."
By the time Journey took the stage, oversized beach balls could be seen bouncing around the crowd as the band ripped through "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)."
As singer Arnel Pineda -- who was discovered in 2007 after videos of him singing surfaced on YouTube.com -- showed off his vocal prowess, the first question that immediately came to mind was 'Steve Perry who?"
With founding member and guitarist Neal Schon working his six-string with intensity and focused precision as the band continued into their song "City of Hope." Despite showing their muscle, the early half of Journey's set relied heavily on ballads, including "Stone in Love," 'Edge of the Moment" and the band's 1978 hit "Lights."
The band followed it up with an extended run through "Wheel in the Sky."
However, the focus on slower numbers seemed to sap some of the energy out of the crowd, still charged from Foreigner and Night Ranger's sets.

Steelers football broadcasts coming to AM 1470, the Fox
FROM KEITH GROLLER
Pitt6Rings, wherever you are, you should be happy.
WSAN, AM 1470, has annnounced that it will be broadcasting all Steelers games in the coming NFL season.
The station is calling itself the home of champions considering all Phillies games are also on AM 1470, the Fox.
I guess there's some merit to the claim. After all, the Phillies have two world titles since they began in 1883, both coming since 1980. The Steelers have won six since they began as a franchise in 1933, all since 1975.
Eric Chase, program director, told me that there will be pregame and postgame coverage of all 16 Steelers games and the playoffs, with the exception of the Super Bowl.
Acknowledging the Steelers strong support here in the Lehigh Valley, and really, throughout the country, Chase is pleased that the Whitehall-based Clear Channel station will have Steelers coverage.
When there's a conflict with the Phillies, as is the case with the Steelers-Ravens season opener on Sept. 11, the Steelers will be shifted to WZZO, 95.1 FM.
"The powers that be over here just thought it was time for true championship football to have a radio home in the Lehigh Valley," Chase said. "We are 100% certain that the Steelers are rightful holders to the title of America's Team. So now every week Steelers and pro football fans in the Valley can tune into the Fox for Tunch Ilkin and Bill Hargrove calling all the championship action."
It's just a shame Myron Cope, Mr. Terrible Towel himself, is no longer around to work the games. The gravel-voiced Cope, a Pittsburgh legend, died in 2008.

Easton Area High School, middle schools miss state exam standards
FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES
Four of the Easton Area School District's 11 schools fell short of state standards in math and reading proficiency for the 2010-11 school year, according to district data.
Although the district as a whole met state standards, the Easton Area High School, Cheston Elementary School and Easton Area Middle Schools 5-6 and 7-8 did not.
That means the high school is in its fifth consecutive year of Corrective Action II, the state's most severe status. It has failed to meet the benchmarks every year since measuring began in 2003.
The Pennsylvania System of School Assessment scores, and the district's plans to improve them in the future, will be discussed at tonight's school board academics in education committee meeting.
Steve Furst, the district's director of teaching and learning, did not immediately respond to a message for comment.
Overall, the district met standards in 180 of the 191 student subgroups that were tested, a 94 percent combined success rate, according to district data.
That's a slight drop from last year, when they met 183 of 188 subgroups for a combined 97 percent success rate.
Last year, only the high school and Francis A. March Elementary School missed state standards. March passed this year.
EAMS 7-8 had been in "making progress" status last year, which meant if it passed one more year it would be out of Corrective Action altogether.
Because it didn't, the school is now in its second year of Corrective Action II, according to district data.
The school's overall scores actually surpassed state standards, with an aggregate reading score of 78.4 percent and math score of 84.05 percent. But the school did not pass because it missed in two out of the 30 student subgroups.
Likewise, EAMS 5-6 passed in all but one of its 33 tested subgroups, according to the data.
The Easton Area High School's aggregate 2010-11 reading and math scores were 58.8 percent and 53.3 percent proficient or higher, respectively, which fall short of the state performance goals of 72 percent and 67 percent.
The high school met 18 of its 25 student subgroups, down from 21 out of 25 last year.
Among the missed subgroups were African American students, who earned reading and math scores of 42.5 percent and 33.9 percent, respectively.
Several other high school subgroups missed the mark in math scores, including Latino/Hispanic students (33.3 percent), economically disadvantaged students (35.4 percent) and special education students (21.2 percent).
Cheston Elementary School met 21 of its 22 subgroups, but African American students received a 50 percent reading score, which fell short of the state's 72 percent benchmark, according to district data.
Among the district's plans to improve their scores are standards-based curriculum revisions, more student tutoring and learning interventions, and "walk-through observations" in the classroom to improve teaching, according to the district.
The district also plans to focus on increasing reading comprehension skills and form "data teams" to make adjustments based on test scores.
District officials also said their plans for a five-period variation of block scheduling will help improve student learning and learning intervention opportunities.

Nazareth Chamber encourages community service
FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES
By Tina Smith
The Nazareth Area Chamber of Commerce is involved in many community events that require many volunteers to make them successful. To name a few, there is the just recently concluded Martin on Main, the Nazareth Kazoo Parade, Loaves & Fishes soup kitchen, The Relay for Life, and the list goes on and on. We also have some new events we are planning, but all of these events take people power.
Through the years we have had many member businesses that have volunteered to help, but as business and the economy gets more difficult, a business owner's main priority must be to run their business.
The need for volunteers for community service is not just a chamber issue but it is a general community issue. I recently saw a request in The Express-Times by an individual that maintained the memorial rose garden near Shafer elementary school. He was looking for people to carry on his work.
Many of our senior citizens have worked hard to support their community, but as they age and pass on we are in desperate need of a new generation to take their place. Our school district no longer requires community service hours to be a part of the graduation requirements, but I am sure that many youth organizations within and outside of the school district still require it and encourage it.
The Nazareth Area Chamber is asking any group, organization, or individual, young or old, that either needs or desires to do community service, to contact us. We will compile a list of those who would like to help and we will disseminate the information to community organizations that need the help. I should clarify that this is not just for Nazareth but is for the general readership area.
If you live in Bath or Easton or anywhere else and want to help in your area, we will pass the information on to those in need.
I thank you in advance for your interest and hope we will all work together to make our community the best that it can be.

Bottom Dollar Food scheduled to open in the fall in Nazareth area
FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES
A new shopping center anchored by a discount grocery store straddling Nazareth and Lower Nazareth Township is set to open this fall.
Construction on the 18,575-square-foot Bottom Dollar Food store began in late spring on the strip mall at the Jandy Boulevard and Route 248.
Both township supervisors and Nazareth Borough Council in 2010 gave conditional use approval.
Waivers had been approved allowing the store to build without planting additional trees/shrubs and without adding sidewalks, plans state.
The grocery store is slated to open in the fall but a specific date has not been determined, said Tenisha K. Waldo, spokeswoman for Bottom Dollar.
The strip mall also is expected to house four smaller retail tenants — spanning an additional 6,725-square-feet — who have yet to be identified. About 148 parking spaces are planned, according to township documents.
“Bottom Dollar Food has great potential in this market because we believe it is underserved in the discount grocer arena,” Waldo said. “We look for opportunities where Bottom Dollar Food can serve local communities by meeting consumers’ needs, delivering unbelievable prices on fresh produce, private brands and the national brands that matter most to customers.”
The company has 21 stores in the greater Philadelphia market, which encompasses 19 stores in Pennsylvania and two stores in New Jersey. Bottom Dollar opened a store in Wilson Borough in April and another in Hanover Township, Lehigh County, before that.
The store is known for its low prices, Waldo said, noting if customers bring in an advertisement of a product sold for a lower price at another store, Bottom Dollar will beat that price by 1 cent. Stores showcase aisles nearly twice the size of other major supermarket chains, she said.
Waldo said Bottom Dollar plans to hire about 30 to 35 employees prior to opening and applications are available on the company’s website at www.bottomdollarfood.com/careers.asp.
The store will then host a grand opening ceremony for the public, in which local public officials, community leaders and customers will join in a kick-off celebration. The company during the celebration also will donate to various local organizations in recognition of its support of the community, she said.
“Our company has a unique brand positioning in that we offer customers a unique discount shopping experience in an energetic atmosphere,” Waldo said. “We chose the orange and lime green color scheme to reflect our lighthearted brand personality traits. Our messaging is also lighthearted and candid.”
Waldo said the company often has marketing promotions at each grand opening, such as giveaways of free Bottom Dollar reusable bags filled with private brand products to the first 200 customers.

Corbett pays preview night visit
FROM THE MORNING CALL
The 159th Great Allentown Fair kicked off Tuesday with a special opening ceremony visit by Gov. Tom Corbett, who lauded the event and all agricultural fairs across the state.
Corbett recently toured the Lehigh Valley by air, surveying damage from Hurricane Irene, and returned for preview night of the beloved event that, for many, marks the end of summer.
"For 159 years people have been doing this; people came to celebrate the end of the growing season," Corbett said. "Today we still do that."
Opening ceremonies included the presentation of colors and the national anthem led by the Allen High School Chorale, which will also perform Wednesday night during the Foreigner concert before a sold-out crowd of more than 10,000 people.
Lehigh County Agricultural Society officials presented an Outstanding Fair Ambassador Award to 30-year volunteer Naomi Grim for her work running livestock shows, and introduced 2011 Fair Queen Margarita Munoz of New Tripoli, who will be the face of the fair and work to educate the public about agriculture at various events throughout the year.
"This is not a Lehigh County or an Allentown event, it's a Lehigh Valley event, it's a northeast event," Corbett said.
There are 113 fairs across the state from June through September. Corbett said fairs are part of Pennsylvania culture and state government has worked to maintain their funding.
"We're going to do our best to bring the fairs back all over the state of Pennsylvania," Corbett said. "People enjoy the community, people enjoy the opportunity to get together, communicate and share good memories."
Meanwhile, among the shooting galleries and games of the Midway, a new generation of fairgoers was busy making memories.
City children mingled with country children and the goats, cattle and sheep they raised and groomed to compete in the fair's livestock competitions. Families and teens, the young and the old, lined up at their favorite food stands, ordering funnel cake, gyros or the root beer float that they've awaited all summer long. Teen girls picked at cotton candy in their homemade Bruno Mars fan T-shirts, waiting for the concert to begin, while women ogled the cakes and preserved vegetables on display in the Argi-Plex.
While the fair periodically undergoes small changes, the key elements that keep the public returning are the familiar games and rides of the Midway, the headlining concerts, variety of food, free entertainment and farm animals. And preview night particularly draws large crowds — for the people as much as for the entertainment.
"It's an interesting experience to say the least, I love people-watching," said Kalina Mellman, a student at the Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Performing Arts.
The fair continues through Monday and is open each day from noon to 11 p.m. with closing night ending at 10 p.m.

Rockmore staying at home; will attend Allen
FROM KEITH GROLLER
Looks like the pipeline that ran from Allentown to Faith Christian in Sellersville is over.
Starting in the 1990s with the very talented Danny Hargrove, who went on to play at UNC-Greensboro and East Stroudsburg University, many Allentown kids began attending and playing basketball at the small Christian school about a 35-minute drive from the city.
As recently as last year, several Allentown kids played for the Lions.
But I was informed that Tyler Rockmore, a junior guard, who helped Faith Christian go 21-6 last year and reach the District One Class A finals and the state tournament, will be attending William Allen this year and will compete for a roster spot and playing time on Doug Snyder's baskeball team.
The Canaries graduated four starters, including guards Branden Harrington and Robert Rodriguez, from its District 11 4A championship team.
Tyler lives in Allentown. He is the son of Wall2Wall Urban Youth Network founder and director Chuck Rockmore, who runs the popular Wall2Wall Adult Mid-Summer Basketball Classic at Allentown's Roosevelt Park every July.
Rockmore, who had 33 3-pointers last season and averaged in double digits, played with Faith throughout the summer. The team went 7-7 in the Stellar Cedar Beach Summer League,
Allen also had a solid summer, reaching the finals of the SportsFest tournament and the semifinals of the Stellar Summer League before losing to Freedom.

Nazareth Area Middle Schoolers break world whistling title
FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES
The Nazareth Area Middle School student body has broken a Guinness World Record for the most people whistling simultaneously at a single venue.
The district learned the students had broken the record Friday when they received certification from representatives of London-based Guinness World Records Ltd. The certificate acknowledges the record has been broken by the Nazareth Area Middle School, complete with a formalized seal.
The previous record was attained June 6, 2010, by 329 people who whistled for about five minutes at a shopping mall in Tokyo.
With a dozen Lehigh Valley-area veterans at their side and the assistance of the Nazareth Area High School Wind Ensemble, roughly 750 seventh- and eighth-graders on May 27 packed the football field to whistle "America the Beautiful" and "God Bless America" in honor of Lehigh Valley veterans.
Nazareth students also had surpassed the five-minute record held by the Japan group.
“It feels really good to reach the goal,” said Monique Ohrwashel, adviser of the student-run Make-A-Wish Club. “It feels rewarding to finally get the certificate and have it be accomplished."
The idea to break the record had come from Ohrwashel’s son, Cameron Ohrwashel, who was 14 and an eighth-grader at the time of the event. It was Cameron Ohrwashel who wanted to break a Guinness World Record and began looking up various records that the school would be able to assist him with.
Prior to the whistling, students also gathered donations from family members, friends and others to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Pennsylvania, Pottsville Regional Office. Monique Ohrwashel said the goal was to raise $1 per student for a total of $750.
The student-run Make-A-Wish Club, which gained the backing of the Nazareth Area School Board, was launched in the fall by Cameron Ohrwashel following his idea to break the record. He said he had wanted to raise funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation — which benefits the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses — while breaking the record.

Salisbury's Lloyd Irons will be back in action for the Falcons
FROM KEITH GROLLER
I learned of this a while ago, but because of vacation and other things, I haven't had chance to get it confirmed until tonight.
Salisbury boys basketball coach Jason Weaver has confirmed that Lloyd Irons will be back in action next basketball season for the defending District 11 2A champs.
Irons was a junior academically at Salisbury last year but was thought to be out of athletic eligibility after the 2010-11 school year.
But someone did their homework and went back and looked at his past record and discovered that Irons did have a year of eligibility left.
Irons' acacdemic record is a bit murky since he moved from New York City to Philadelphia and then transferred to Salisbury Township to live with his brother and his wife.
Irons turns 19 in November but the PIAA bylaws say that's ok. To be eligible to participate, you must not be 19 before on June 30 preceding the school year.
Salisbury presented a case to the District 11 committee and earlier this month the district declared him eligible to play in the coming 2011-12 season.
That's a big plus for the Falcons who graduated eight seniors from their 19-7 team that went to the Colonial League finals, won the district title and then gave Prep Charter all it wanted in the first round of the PIAA 2A state tournament.
"We’re extremely happy that Lloyd will be able to play with us next season,” WDistrict11BB eaver said. “He came on strong for us at the end of last season and has continued to work hard through the spring and summer. He had a good AAU season and played well for us in the Cedar Beach league and in the summer tournaments."
While Salisbury learned that it will have a standout player on its roster, we've also learned that two other Colonial League members have lost quality players.
Tyler Kohl, Notre Dame's outstanding freshman a year ago, has reportedly transferred to Perkiomen Prep and Justin Festa, one of Southern Lehigh's top players a year ago, has transferred to Faith Christian in Sellersville.

Palmer Park Mall evacuated after power outages, odor
FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES
The Palmer Park Mall was evacuated tonight and shut down because of an odor after partial power outages in the building, officials said.
Hundreds of customers and employees were forced to leave the 2455 Park Avenue mall about 6:20 after visitors reported what smelled like a fire near the Payless ShoeSource and Fiat stores near The Bon-Ton entrance.
There was no fire, and officials think the odor was caused by the mall's heating-ventilation-and-air-conditioning system not receiving enough electricity due to power outages in certain parts of the mall, said Palmer Township fire Commissioner Delmar Grube.
"In our estimation, the HVAC unit was not getting enough power for normal speed, and the resulting overheating caused the odor," Grube said. "The HVAC system then pulled the odor into the mall."
As a precaution, power to the entire mall was shut down, Grube said. Pam Richetta, the mall's interim general manager, said the managers were told to shut down their stores and close up for the night.
"We do not believe there is any emergency issue, but we'd rather be safe than sorry," Richetta said. "Everything will be resolved more efficiently this evening without the stress of a lot of people walking around."
Metropolitan Edison was called about the incident but could not respond immediately because crews were on "storm mode" due to the power outages caused by Hurricane Irene this weekend, Grube said.
Dozens of store employees milled around the parking lot and outside of the mall entrance before they were told to go home. Grube said the parking lot was originally completely full but cleared out after customers left the mall.

Philadelphia Eagles and Michael Vick agree to a six-year contract
FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES
Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles have agreed on a six-year deal, the team announced tonight.
A source familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press the deal is worth $100 million, including about $40 million guaranteed. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because terms weren't released.
Vick has come a long way since spending 18 months in federal prison on dogfighting charges. He led the Eagles to the NFC East title last year, was the starting quarterback in the Pro Bowl and was the AP Comeback Player of the Year.

Upper Nazareth yard waste facility opens additional days for cleanup efforts
FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES
In an effort to aid residents in their cleanup efforts following impact from Hurricane Irene, Upper Nazareth Township Supervisors have approved opening the municipality’s yard waste facility on additional days.
The facility, located on Friedenstahl Avenue will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.
Board Vice Chairman Scott Sylvainus said this is in addition to the normal scheduled day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday. Additionally, the facility will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, which had initially been scheduled to be closed for the Labor Day holiday.
“We all hope these additional hours assist our residents with their cleanup efforts,” Sylvainus said.

NICK AT NITE FALL 2011
Today we will reveal Nick at Nite's Fall 2011 schedule. They are adding Friends to the line-up, as we have told you many times already, but now we have the timeslots and the entire fall schedule! Friends joins the Nick at Nite line-up beginning next week with week-long marathon. The 236-episode catalogue kicks off with a 10-hour marathon each weeknight, beginning Monday (Sept. 5), through Sunday (Sept. 11), from 8pm to 6am (all times ET/PT), except on Friday and Saturday it will be from 10pm-6am. The series will regularly air weeknights from 10-11pm and encore from 1-2am with two back-to-back episodes. On weekends, the series will air in 10pm-12am ET/PT block. To get ready for the Friends marathon, Nick at Nite will air a four-night That '70s Show marathon from Wednesday, Sept. 1 to Sunday, Sept. 4 basically from 8pm-5am.
Nick at Nite's "Best of Friends" marathon will highlight a different cast member each night of the week with themed episodes centering on either Rachel, Ross, Joey, Phoebe, Chandler or Monica. Throughout the week, Facebook friends of Friends will be able to vote for their favorite episodes on the official Facebook TV show page, which will culminate with their top ten picks airing on Sunday, Sept. 11 beginning at 8pm. If you recall, Warner Bros. Domestic Cable sold Friends to Nick at Nite in a shared window with TBS that begins this fall, a deal that will harvest $200 million in license fees and advertising. It was reported that Nick at Nite will pay about $500,000 an episode for the right to carry the series post-6 p.m. (meaning 6pm-6am rights) for a six-year term lasting until fall 2017. TBS, which renewed the series, will have the 6am-6pm rights this fall, however for 2011-12 only it can air the series in the 6pm hour.
Moving on to the actual Nick at Nite Fall 2011 schedule, the original game show Family Brainsurge will air Mon-Thurs at 8pm, followed by My Wife & Kids at 8:30pm, which remains in its timeslot. The 9pm hour will still feature back-to-back episodes of the Nick at Nite hit George Lopez every weekday. Friends will follow every night at 10-11pm, pushing That '70s Show to the weeknights at 11pm hour. The 12am hour will feature an encore of George Lopez, followed by an encore of Friends at 1am. Back-to-back Everybody Hates Chris will air in the 2am hour, followed by an encore of That '70s Show at 3am. The 4am hour will feature a full hour of My Wife & Kids, followed by a half-hour of Family Matters around 5:30am. And finally, weekdays from 6-7am will be The Nanny now. Now, Nick at Nite will still be off-the-clock, so all times are approximate after 11:30pm.
On weekends, there are some variations. Friends will air a block from 10pm-12am on both nights, followed by That '70s Show at midnight and My Wife & Kids at 1am. Family Matters will only air Mon-Sat at 5:30am now, while Home Improvement is totally gone and The Nanny is now weekdays 6-7am and Sunday nights 2-3am. And as of now, there is no sign of a return for Married...with Children to Nick at Nite, which was removed in early August.
View the FULL Nick at Nite Fall 2011 schedule. Of course, stay with us for any further updates.
Moving on, TBS has ordered a sitcom pilot titled Men at Work from Sony Pictures Television. The pilot will be a multi-camera sitcom from executive producers Jamie Tarses and Breckin Meyer. If it gets picked-up to series, the series will be the third non-Tyler Perry sitcom for TBS after My Boys and The Bill Engvall Show, both of which are not airing anymore. Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns and House of Payne and Ice Cube's Are We There Yet are not original TBS series, but they air new episodes through syndication. Casting for the Men at Work pilot has not been announced yet.
In the pilot, when Milo is thrust into single life after discovering his girlfriend has been cheating, he finds comfort in three best friends who help reinvent his manhood with the promise of sex, alcohol and some serious bromance. This half-hour series is written and executive-produced by Breckin Meyer (TNT's Franklin & Bash).
Stay with us for further updates and if this series will get picked-up for a series order.

Jim Tkach is a grandfather and coaching in Delaware
FROM KEITH GROLLER
At the height of the storm on Saturday night, I got an e-mail from former Northern Lehigh coach Jim Tkach who told me he was bunkering down in his new home in Milford, Del. -- not too far from Rehoboth Beach.
All went well we've since learned.
Jim and his wife Sandi moved from Slatington to Delaware in the spring to be closer to their daughter, Tristan, and their first grandchild.
Well, the grandchild, Cooper Bo Brannan, made its arrival on Thursday, Aug. 25 at 4:10 a.m.
The baby and entire family are doing great.
Jim is on his brother, Mike's, coaching staff at Milford High School.
Jim said: "Football is going well. A bit of an adjustment. Things in the Valley are much more intense and focused than it is here."
He said he has already made some great relationships with the players at Milford, which is not a surprise.
"Like any other young person, they want attention and discipline," Jim said.
On another note, Tkach said the Bo Tkach Foundation continues to grow and prosper.
"I have been up to speak twice in the last two weeks, but the six-hour round trip doesn't leave us too much time to visit," Jim said.
The Panther Valley – Lehighton game is being dedicated to the Bo Tkach Foundation on Thursday Sept 15 and the Northern Lehigh–Northwestern game in Slatington on Oct. 14 will be a night to honor both the Bo Tkach Foundation and the Tackle ALS organIzation of Brett Snyder, the former Northwestern and Lehigh University star.
Accoring to Mike Feifel's new book on the history of Colonial League football, Jim ranks fourth on the all-time list of Colonial League coaching leaders with a record of 90-30 in 12 seasons at Northern Lehigh (1994-05).
That does not include Jim's two years at Northern Lehigh 1992-93 when the Bulldogs were in the Cenntennial League (they were a combined 3-19) and it also does not include his three seasons at Palmerton (1979-81) when the Blue Bombers were also in the Centennial League and went 8-20-4.
Put it all together and Jim coached at Northern Lehigh and Palmerton for a combined 17 seasons, going 101-69-4.

The history of Colonial League Football in the Lehigh Valley
FROM KEITH GROLLER
That's the name of the book that Southern Lehigh assistant football coach and Lehighton Times-News writer Mike Feifel has produced. Actually, the complete title is "RISE TO PROMINENCE: History of Colonial League Football in the Lehigh Valley."
We wrote about this last year, but the project is totally finished and available for purchase.
This is a terrific book -- a must for any Lehigh Valley football fan -- chock full of stats, facts and figures.
This 210-page book features every score of every game ever played in this league which began in the 1975-76 school year.
As you thumb through the pages you realize that the Colonial League is a better league than most people give it credit for.
For example, Catty's Jonathan Linton, seen at the right as a member of the Buffalo, ran for 4,149 yards and 64 touchdowns in his spectacular career that spanned 1989-92.JLinton
As Feifel said as a guest on our Saturday morning "Calling All Sports" radio show, it shouldn't be compared to the East Penn Conference or the Lehigh Valley Conference because the schools are smaller.
Yet, the league has produced four state finalists since 2001 and has had teams play in seven Eastern finals.
This book answers so many questions.
For example:
1. Who's the winningest coach in league history?
2. Which two teams combined for the highest-scoring game in league history?
3. What was the lowest scoring game in league history?
4. What was the longest unbeaten streak against another league member?
5. Which was the most successful member of the original nine?
6. Who's been the best since the 1994 merger?
7. Which are the only three programs not to have won a league title?
8. Which was the most successful program of the 2000s?
The answers:
1. Paul Farnan (at right).Farnan
2. Northern Lehigh 68, Salisbury 27 in 2010
3. Pen Argyl 3, Bangor 2 in 1976
4. Bangor over Palisades, 25-0-0
5. Nazareth 117-34-1.
6. Northern Lehigh 126-44
7. Notre Dame, Salisbury and Southern Lehigh
8. Northern Lehigh 79-21.
I don't want to give anything else away, but this is just a sampling of the information that's in this book.
Again, just tremendous if you care about the league and Lehigh Valley-area football.
Mike, who is actually a Central Catholic graduate, can be very proud of his work.
I hope he is rewarded with a lot of sales.
To purchase this record book, go to clfootballhistory.weebly.com
We hope to have Mike on a future edition of The Morning Call's "Calling All Sports" TV show.

CBS3 Hurricane Info
FROM LAURA NACHMAN
Here’s some behind the scenes information about the CBS3 hurricane coverage courtesy of CBS3:
CBS 3 has been on the air continuously more than any other Philadelphia television station — we will be on until 6 p.m. today before clearing the CBS Evening News which would clock in at 37 hours of continuous local coverage. CBS 3′s Eyewitness News team went on the air at 5 a.m. Saturday with Morning Anchors Ukee Washington and Erika von Tiehl kicking off the marathon newscast. Anchors Chris May and Susan Barnett relieved the a.m. team at 2 p.m. staying on the air until early Sunday morning. The teams have been rotating since that time. The entire Eyewitness News weather team of Kathy Orr, Kate Bilo, Justin Drabick and Carol Erickson were on duty all weekend along with Traffic Reporter Bob Kelly as well Even new CBS 3 Morning Meteorologist Katie Fehlinger who doesn’t officially start on-air at the station until September 5, got an early introduction to Philadelphia audiences when she filed a report from WCBS in New York for CBS 3.on Saturday and Sunday.
CBS Network programming on Saturday was broadcast on sister station WPSG-TV (The CW Philly). The CW Philly also simulcast some of CBS 3′s live news coverage as did sister CBS Radio stations WPHT which aired CBS 3 audio overnight Saturday and 94 WYSP which aired it 6-10 a.m. Sunday as a public service.
Many of the CBS 3 new staffers passed on nearby hotel accommodations to stay at the station all night including the station management team, including VP/News Director Susan Schiller, President/General Manager Jon Hitchcock and Chief Meteorologist Kathy Orr who stayed at the station around the clock.
The station’s locally-based closed captioning service, Philadelphia Captioning, stayed with the station 24/7 as well with two court reporters captioning the newscast rotating in two hour shifts.
