Jim Sawyer pitched a two-hitter and Alex Longernecker delivered a tie-breaking RBI single in the fifth inning today to lead Bath to a 3-1 victory over Birches and a sweep of their best-of-three Northampton County American Legion semifinal playoff series at Saylorsburg Playground.
Bath, the second seed, will host No. 4 Nazareth in the first game of the best-of-three championship series beginning at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Cliff Cowling Field.
Longernecker singled to center off Russell Baldino to score Black and give Bath a 2-1 lead with two outs in the fifth inning. Catcher James Bertolotti stole home in the fifth inning for an insurance run.
Longernecker and Andreas Haller each had two hits for Bath.
Birches put runners on first and second in the last of the seventh but Sawyer struck out Baldino to end it.
