Central Catholic graduate gets coaching post at ESU

FROM KEITH GROLLER

I covered Sheelin and Shavaun Fisher throughout their Central Catholic and Bloomsburg softball careers.

Both were outstanding pitchers who dominated the local scene while there were here and were even better at Bloom.

But it turns out that they weren't the only two stars in the family.

Shannon Fisher made her mark in the sport of volleyball. And this granddaughter of legendary Central Catholic and Palmerton sports figure George Kinek has been named the coach of the East Stroudsburg University women's volleyball team. I am sure George is looking down and smiling about this.

Shannon played all four years at Central Catholic, helping the Vikettes win one state title and finish second in the state in another season.

She also had a stellar career at Lafayette College.

Here's the ESU release on her being named coach:
EAST STROUDSBURG – Shannon Fisher, an assistant coach at East Stroudsburg University for the last three seasons, has been named head coach of the Warriors' women's volleyball program for the 2011 season.

Fisher, a four-year letterwinner as a player at Lafayette, was an assistant coach for the Leopards in 2007 prior to coming to ESU. She has also served as a coach for Court Authority Volleyball Academy for the last six years and coached teams to the USA Volleyball Junior Olympic Nationals in 2010 and 2011.

She has been involved with a number of camps, clinics and recreational leagues, and participated in the USA Volleyball High Performance Coaches' Clinic at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs in January 2008. She is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

A 2007 graduate of Lafayette, Fisher was the Leopards' team captain as a senior, when she was named to the All-Patriot League second team at middle hitter, led the league with a .372 hitting percentage and ranked fifth in blocks.

Fisher was a Dean's List student at Lafayette and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Anthropology and Sociology. She was a member of the Athletic Honor Roll each semester, was a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee all four years and was Vice President as a senior. She earned her Master's degree in Sport Management from ESU this May.

Fisher was an assistant coach for the last three seasons under Michelle Kreeger, who served as head coach for five years and helped the Warriors to PSAC Tournament appearances in 2006 and 2008. ESU graduated four four-year starters from last year's team in three-time All-PSAC East outside hitter Alyson Stark, All-Region libero Lindsey Lullo, middle hitter Brianne Bachman and outside hitter Emily Detter.
