Nelson leads Parkland to top of LVC again

FROM THE MORNING CALL

After surrendering the Lehigh Valley Conference crown last season, the Parkland baseball program again can claim league supremacy.

The No. 2 seed Trojans completed a long Saturday at Sammy Balliet Stadium by beating No. 1 seed Nazareth 5-1 in the much-delayed LVC title game. Parkland opened the day with an 8-1 semifinal win over No. 3 Emmaus, while Nazareth advanced to the title game by beating No. 4 Liberty 6-3.

By winning twice Saturday, Parkland (18-4 overall) claimed its fourth league title in the past five years. The Trojans won three straight league titles from 2007 to 2009 before Easton won the LVC in 2010. Saturday's victory also gave it the No. 1 seed for the District 11 Class 4A playoffs, which open with one first-round game Monday.

Parkland right-hander Matt Nelson fired seven solid innings, allowing one run and four hits to earn the win. His effort allowed the Trojans to beat Nazareth (19-3) for the second time in three meetings this season.

Ryan Sutovich hit a two-run single in the first inning off Nazareth starter Dan Shepherd, and Parkland kept the lead all afternoon. The Trojans added single runs in the second, fourth and sixth innings after Nazareth scored its lone run in the first.

D.C. Castillo went 4-for-4 with one double, one run scored and one RBI for Parkland. Sutovich added two hits and two RBIs for Parkland, which will open District 11 play with a Class 4A quarterfinal game Tuesday.
