Bethlehem Catholic defeats Emmaus High School for Lehigh Valley Conference boys volleyball crown

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

The Bethlehem Catholic High School boys volleyball team defeated Emmaus High School in five games to win the Lehigh Valley Conference championship tonight at Liberty High School's Memorial Gym before a spirited crowd of more than 500 fans.

The Golden Hawks' 25-21, 25-21, 22-25, 23-25, 15-9 conquest dealt Emmaus its first loss this season and avenged their only defeat of the regular season, suffered on April 28 to the Green Hornets.

"I think this is the best match we've played all year," Bethlehem Catholic coach Jeff Koch said.

LVC co-MVP Mike Stianche led the Golden Hawks with 22 kills and served the final two points in the fifth game. Junior Kyle Michalski had 10 of his 12 kills in the first two games. Sophomore setter Bryan Brown served five consecutive points, including a pair of aces, as Becahi roared to a 6-1 lead in the decisive fifth game.

"Everyone who played in this match for us had some kind of impact," Koch said.

Becahi won't be in action until the first round of the PIAA Class AA state tournament on May 31. Emmaus is the top seed for the District 11 Class AAA tournament and received a bye into next week's semifinals.
